So you're saying Leafs fans would be happier with their defense if Brady skjei was getting the 3rd most minutes?

I think you have to look at the composition of the top 4 defensemen on Carolina vs Toronto to answer that question. Slavin and Pesce are gold standard for two way defensive work and are LHD and RHD so they can be mix and matched and stretched out to give you 40+ minutes per night if split apart. Both give you Jake Muzzin+ size with TJ Brodie processing. Skjei is a step down as a top 4 guy but has great wheels. And then you have Tony DeAngelo who is giving them near Morgan Rielly offensive production in a carefree 4 spot minuetwise and special teams work.

Not to mention Pesce is having a rough year too.

Carolina has a similar problem as Toronto, solid top and third pair, struggling 2nd pair that should be better.

Pesce has been struggling as much, if not worse, than Muzzin this season.

i think the hurricanes have the same concern about Skej like leafs do with Muzzin.

the second pairing of the Hurricanes has not been great this year. Are you more confident skej and Pesce get there game back on track or Muzzin Holl?

You're comparing Brady skjei to Jake Muzzin?

Come on.

Slavin is a stud no doubt. Pesce is just a solid guy that Leafs fans would be fretting wasn't good enough if he was here.

The truth is neither have a problem - they're two of the best defenses in hockey.

The only problem is in Leafs fans' minds that they can't seem to recognize a good dcorps when they see it.

Jake Muzzin is one of the best, if not the best #3D in the league.

I am still very confused as what people are talking about when it comes to him. He’s “worse” than last year because last year was an anomaly and he was legitimately one of the best defensemen in the league. This season, he’s largely been having the same impact as he’s had in previous years, before last season.

I am very confident with the group of 8 we have currently. I can see Dermott or Holl used to get a F, but otherwise, Lybushkin was the perfect addition. He’s had good impacts playing tough minutes for the Yotes, and pairing with Chychrun. He could easily be the guy that slots next to Muzzin.

You’ve been saying there’s been nothing wrong with his d group for a while now, yet Dubas went out and added a big, physical, right hand defenceman and even mentioned himself Lyubushkin adds an element we really don’t have on this roster. Clearly there’s room for upgrades. Yes our defenceman are good pre Ritchie trade but it definitely needs more if we’re serious about winning the Stanley Cup.

There's always room for upgrades.

But yes I've been telling you they're good for a while and now they're a top 5 defensive team in the league

Because he’s rumoured to be on the market and the profile/contract is nice?

so ? hes a 15 goal scorer at best , remove the insane october and hes an average producer. .......... the guy plays 19+ min a game for a while for the hawks now and averages 1 shot a game for an "offensive player" and has as many hits an f***en engvall. Hes also 23 so the upside isnt there like younger players. hes also 25 pounds lighter than bunting. his tenacity means nothing when hes lighter than marner and would be the smallest player on the leafs.

again why is everyone high on this guy ?? its like everyone seems a 1mil contract and they get a hardon.
i wonder why the hawks are trying to unload him.

In terms of upgrades, fair to say in terms of need they would be ranked this way?
1. Top 4 Defenseman
2. 2nd line winger
3. Legit #1 goalie

Yet there’s room for improvement, like Lyubushkin and hopefully an upgrade on Holl next.

How about a more long term fix? Kerfoot, Dermott, 1st, Amirov, For Alex Tuch? Buffalo might do that I mean he's an asset that will be too old by the time the get a team that might make the playoffs.

That's a big overpay.

I'd overpay for a top 4 RD but I wouldn't for another winger.
