Brandon Hagel anyone? That contract is sexy as hell. Dubas has talked about acquiring players with term, that's a lot easier to manage when the AAV is so low.

We just need more good forwards and he seems to be a pretty well rounded player.

it looked terrible when it was made and even worse in hindsight. The Leafs also tried to give him a fairly big contract in the offseason according to Mirtle, which thankfully didn't end up getting signed
Really, I didn't know the second part. Any more detail about the terms or a link?

Man that Foligno trade was horrid
Young GM who wanted a top 6 gritty winger with leadership intangibles. Thought he had a team that was worth going all in on. 3rd stringer Rittich acquired, Ben Hutton acquired to be a #7....I can't fault him for trying. But undoubtedly a massive swing and miss thinking he had the team to do it, and overpaying on a guy like Foligno. I doubt you see him get burned twice. Hence he seems to be focusing on contracts that come with some term

The big asset on a rental was a pre-expansion draft/north division thing.
He preferred term before, so I don’t think it’s a new lesson.
I didn’t love the cost, and injury ruined it, but I agree and endorse all the rationale behind last years deadline moves.

Yeah it seemed pretty clear Foligno wasn't the same player as a few years ago. I wouldn't have touched that deal but say the guy was dragged down by CBJ struggles and he revived it could have worked out. I agree they screwed the pooch but the goal is to win in their window and not to hoard assets. Now GMs don't bird dog prospects and they have limited time to spend on pro scouting, that's what they pay other people for. Troy Bodie bears at least as much blame as KD for the Foligno decision and he's gone so this is Eric Joyce's chance to shine and bring the club the big add. For all we know Dubas got burned by Bodie and picked up Foligno mostly on his recommendation.

I have no idea if Dubas would be less likely to spend but I am going to say not as a weak playoff might be the end of him. Players we don't want to lose will be gone but they will get out of the first round and I am good with that.

If you folks didn't like the Foligno package, you might not like what Chicago's asking for Hagel.
They're gonna be looking for a premium overpay

Seeing Toffoli’s price makes me think more about JT Miller’s value now.

Miller > Toffoli but Toffoli is signed for an extra year that holds more value.

We need some major help on D. Our D are getting destroyed and I'm not even a tiny but confident in Liljegren and Holl come playoff time. F help is a luxury at this point. We're fine there.

Tavares-Nylander have been fighting it lately. Throw it in the blender. Swap the wingers for Tavares and Kampf. Let Kampf help settle down Kerfoot & Nylander with his defensive presence and get them back to basics. Give JT some defensively responsible worker bees in Mikheyev & Kase. This second line, despite their goal, has been bad for a while now

Yes
Brandon tanev and giordano

would love to see giordano play with Lilly

I'd expect the Leafs to be very interested in Giordano in the off-season if he makes it there. Right now though, he's expensive. He's a solid veteran but he's also going to be 39... so he'll have to take a serious Spezza level paycut.

If Seattle would be willing to retain 50% and also take Ritchie in a package deal... maaaaybe it could work by the deadline. Maybe.

Retain money AND take a bad contract? We'd have to be packaging a 1st round pick or one of our top prospects with that..

If you can re-sign for another year at a league minimum, maybe it becomes ok. Ron Francis hasn't shown to be a great GM anyway, so perhaps Dubas can take advantage.

Giordano will pick the team where he wants to go. Maybe that lowers the price of acquisition. Maybe.

It's very unlikely though for sure. As I said... maybe.

Crouse, Hagel and Mayfield would certainly make our team harder to play against, add different element to the team.

Ritchie, Dermott, Engvall can be used as trade bait along with prospects and picks.

bunting Matthews Marner
Crouse Tavares Nylander
Hagel Kampf Kase
Mik Kerfoot Spezza
Simmonds

Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Mayfield
Sandin Holl

McCann has 13 ES goals. Dude could have hit 30 goals here this season being in our top 6 and PP2 if you consider he has 20 right now for the Kraken. He'd take a cut in PP goals going from PP1 to our PP2, but he can hit 20 goals at ES alone. Sucks we have to waste assets now to get a winger that can finish when all we had to do was keep McCann over one of Holl or Kerfoot and plop him beside JT-Nylander.

Still have anxiety over doing any trades. We're usually on the wrong end of player evaluation lately but have been on the right end of drafting. Prospect we trade away probably ends up scoring 30 goals within the next 3 years. Might be best to focus on depth upgrades only, and just build our depth through the draft. Getting really tired of our trades or trade related moves.
