I'm all in favour of getting physical guys. Leafs should have been beating down on Caulfield the entire season. Knock him around in the scrums and try to intimidate a rookie

Why do the Leafs care about beating down an underperforming rookie on one of the worst NHL teams in history?

Seems like we should be setting our sights higher than that.

To be fair, we are like a year removed from Marincin playing in the playoffs for us. All it takes is an injury and one of Sandin/Liljegren to start struggling and we’ll be glad to have Lybushkin and Dermott around.

That being said, I could see Dermott used in a trade for a forward.

There’s been rumours of Hagel out of Chicago and they make a ton of sense for Dermott as well.

Staple has said he thinks Dermott could fit what the Isles are looking for. Is there a forward there that could work for us?

Frankly, I was surprised Dermott wasn’t in the deal to ARI.

Islanders could be a team interested in Dermott, they are in dire need to revamp their team. I just have a hard time seeing a fit because I doubt they'll have interest in trading a pick, and the Leafs probably would rather make a trade for a player as well that can help them now. They have so many bad expensive players... it's crazy. Maybe in the off-season it would make more sense for the Islanders to do it.

Hagel for Dermott would be amazingly good. Probably not enough though considering the rumours is they want a big futures package.

So is the likeliness that Liljegren is with the Marlies until the playoffs?

They won't do him dirty like that. He's been good and should be with the Leafs. Keefe has pretty much confirmed Liljegren will stay up with the Leafs because he's earned it. They might do the send down/call up to really penny pinch.

So I would suspect the Leafs are contempt with having a lower amount of cap space going into the deadline.

Assuming there isn't a move to trade Dermott/Holl soon, will be intreresting how Keefe manages 8 d men who shouldn't sit out too long.

Competition is good I guess. It's going to suck for whoever sits out but that's the business.

I don't think the Leafs will mind trading any of them if someone makes sense but it will be hard to justify a trade that doesn't improve the team.

What are the odds of the Leafs adding at the deadline? Exactly how much cap do we have?

Depends on what's available. They've already acquired a rental, so I would suspect any other addition to the Leafs will be for someone with some form of term or at least a RFA. It will also depend on who's available for what we have to offer.

At this rate, we'll have about 1M in cap space by the deadline, so it'll have to be a heck of a trade to fit an addition in.

Post 1028 answers your questions... it also depends on who gets traded out. If Holl, or Dermott or both get moved... it's different than what we have right now. I wouldn't be overly shocked, if both got moved, and we brought in a decent #4.

I think you almost need to create two third pairings and rotate game for game.

Assuming Lybushkin is going to be with Muzzin, or at the very least Liljegren, you run two pairs of Sandin-Holl, Dermott-Lybushkin/Liljegren and rotate them.

Likely rotate the kids on the roster

We'll likely see a mix of these two options.

If Dubas really wanted to create some extra cap space though, he could send both Liljegren & Sandin down for some non-game days. Having both down the entire time would result in roughly 4m space at TDL so ~2.5m space is very feasible.

I doubt Dubas would go overkill with this though because it's essentially money coming out of their pockets.

Thats true, apparently that market is dry and so prices might be high.

It's not even that prices are high. We would have to pay a high price for what is likely a lateral move.

People think Miller, Manson, Mayfield, Severson, Larsson, Chiarot, etc. are upgrades on Holl. I really do not think they are, and people can't even really use Muzzin carrying Holl this year as an excuse because Holl has arguably outperformed him in the same role.

A trade built around Dermott + Andersor/other good prospect for Jarnkrok + Cholowski makes a good amount of sense for us. Hard thing is what F prospect makes it make sense for Seattle.

We get another multi-tool type forward who is still young, and a LHD who is already in the minors who can play NHL games if we have injuries.

Cholowski was claimed on waivers. He is not in the minors. We would have to keep him in the NHL full time.

Also, he sucks. I would rather use guys we have on the Marlies over him.

Jarnkrok is decent, but he is a rental, and one who is not really going to upgrade our top 9. Sure, he'd upgrade our 4th line, but is that worth the price?

JT miller would be too expensive I think but Hagel might be more affordable for us, if we can't get him might as well grab a clutterbuck from the islanders and package with Mayfield. Give them a nice package back

The rumoured price on Hagel (1st+top prospect+something else) is ridiculous. Chicago trades a guy like this every couple years. Versteeg, Shaw, Schmaltz, Hartman etc. They're not special players. Hagel is basically Kerfoot at 50% retention signed for an extra year.

If the cost were Dermott and a 1st maybe I'd do it.

Clutter is one of my favorite players, would love to see him play for the Leafs; I think he'd be great on Kampf's line & could free up Kase from it for a more offensive role. Mayfield is a guy I'm a fan of as well.

I think it's highly likely though that Clutterbuck resigns with the Islanders, but that doesn't necessarily mean they wouldn't deal him with plans of resigning him in the offseason.
