Dzingel going on waivers today. I imagine he gets claimed considering Brooks/Amadio were claimed. He's far better than both.

He also costs more. Important consideration.

Ultimately, it is not a huge deal. Opens up a contract spot for us, and it is not the first time we've lost depth on waivers.

The 1.1 million will come off the cap either way. Minors or on another team. All good. Wouldn't mind him passing through and having him available as depth but not the end of the world either way.

This is the exact kind of deal I'd be looking for with Dermott. Kravtsov is at the top of my list, but I've always liked Frost & think there's more there.

I'm not a big fan of Kravtsov and we're loaded with future LWs but that could be something that works to cut cap space and gain an asset.

I doubt Dzingel gets claimed because of his 1.1m cap hit, he'll become more valuable once completely buried in the AHL & temporarily waiver exempt though.

It'd be sweet if he rediscovered some of his game, he's only 29.

I would definitely be looking at moving Mikheyev/Engvall + Holl/Dermott + 1st Round Pick for a partner for Muzzin.

Smart interview by Dubbas.

Lower expectations, so fans don't think we are going to somehow win the cup based on the next trade.

Every GM is working all the time to improve their team, whether it's long term or short term.

I kind of wish we added a bit more to get Crouse instead of Dzingle, but I'm happy with the trade.

I'd like to add one more winger with some size, snarl and net driving ability or a C who makes Spezza the #13, and a rhd partner for muzzin.
If the D ends up being
Morgan - TJ
Muzzin - ??
Sandin - Lyub
I think that's pretty darn solid.
Assuming you move Holl and Dermott, your next two guys up are Lilgren and Kral

The Leafs have 8 everyday NHL defenseman now, so you’d have to imagine one of Dermott/Holl will still be traded since they didn’t send a D the other way in the Bush deal.

Do they sell that spare D for futures? Or use that D (Holl/Derm) in a package for an upgrade beside Muzzin? If it’s the former, I could see one more small deal like Dermott to SJ for Middleton + pick.

Otherwise, definitely get the feeling it'll be a more tame TDL, which is probably for the best.

I think they want 8 dmen heading into the playoffs tbh.

Seems like it, but IMO it's overkill to have two of Liljegren, Sandin, Holl, Dermott, Lyubushkin sitting at any given time.

If 8D is the plan, wouldn't mind downgrading a Holl/Dermott with a pick also coming back.

I wonder if Dubas and Co are worried about Muzzin getting injuried/not making it through the playoffs again so may retain an extra D

To be fair, we are like a year removed from Marincin playing in the playoffs for us. All it takes is an injury and one of Sandin/Liljegren to start struggling and we’ll be glad to have Lybushkin and Dermott around.

That being said, I could see Dermott used in a trade for a forward.

There’s been rumours of Hagel out of Chicago and they make a ton of sense for Dermott as well.

Staple has said he thinks Dermott could fit what the Isles are looking for. Is there a forward there that could work for us?

Frankly, I was surprised Dermott wasn’t in the deal to ARI.

We also have years like last year where Hutton was acquired and not even used even though Muzzin was hurt and Sandin was struggling.

I think the Leafs move Dermott if they get a 2nd round pick for him right now. If they only get a 3rd, then maybe they wait and take that kind of offer in the offseason.

The Leafs could then turn and target a guy like Jaycob Megna out of San Jose, Brad Hunt out of VAN, Erik Gustafsson out of CHI, or Juuso Riikola out of PIT (who would have a 25k overage charge but not really all that big of a deal for one year) to be a #8 for a throw away prospect.

I'm all in favour of getting physical guys. Leafs should have been beating down on Caulfield the entire series****. Knock him around in the scrums and try to intimidate a rookie
