Good deal for Calgary. Good player who is under control at a decent hit for a couple of more years.

Maybe. The 1st round pick is obvious, and we can debate which winger prospect the Leafs might have had to include here.

Hockey prospecting has Heineman as a 30% chance of 100GP+ and 2% of being a star at age 20.5 in his D2. The closest Leaf is Miettinen, 20.4, D2, 2% star, 35% chance of 100+ gp. Miettinen is also a LOT more toolsy.

They really gave up a C prospect + a 1st for a borderline 1st line winger signed to 2.5 more years at slightly over 4. Hard to believe they couldn't do better than that even with Calgary.

Also, we may have asked about Toffoli and got either a) we don't want to trade him in division, like we've heard both Montreal and Ottawa doing in the past, or b) they asked for a significantly better prospect + our 1st. Not to mention the only way we could clear out that kind of salary is with Kerfoot or Ritchie+, who Montreal probably doesn't want at this stage.

Not sure what would have got it done, just disappointed they didn't get it done.

Who would be the Leaf comparable prospect to the one Calgary gave up?

Plenty of variables to consider, yes. I do like the trade for Calgary right now but am not particularly viewing it as a missed opportunity for the Leafs either.

Morgs shed some light on that in response to my previous post.

I'm *probably* still of the mindset that any solid trade currency is best used for a defensive upgrade rather than for a comparable forward.

Yeah I would prioritize the defense over a forward as well but I do think they need both.
Always been a fan of Toffoli, he would have been a perfect addition.

I trust that Dubas must have something better in store for us.

Robertson for Faber would be a solid move to shore up holes in prospect pools for both organizations.
This is an under appreciated approach.
Don’t have to target vets with term necessarily.
Upside for upside.
Lotsa ways to skin a cat.

Looks like MTL isn't limiting their selling to pending UFAs only. I like Toffoli as well. I think that being able to upgrade on both the blueline and at forward will depend upon the desired quality of each upgrade. I suppose this CGY-MTL trade was the first domino of significance leading into the trade deadline.

So tried my hand at a “realistic” lead up to and deadline day for us.

Trade #1
TOR trades Nick Ritchie and Veeti Miettinen to PHI for Justin Braun. TOR retains 300K on Nick Ritchie.
(It’s been reported the Leafs won’t retain any more than 300K on Ritchie, as that is the buy out cost. Flyers have reported interest in Ritchie, as they are looking to add size up front, and get him at a reduced cap hit, while also picking up a solid prospect for a D-man they are expected to move)

Trade #2
TOR trade Travis Dermott to BOS for Jake Debrusk.
(TOR looking to add a F, BOS looking to add a LD. The two rivals help each other out by exchanging similar players for each other’s position of need)

Trade #3
TOR trades Justin Holl to LAK for a 3rd Round Pick
(Pretty simple. LAK is reportedly looking for a RD with term. They get one that fits the LA system relatively cheap).

Trade #4
TOR trades 3rd Round Pick to VAN for Luke Schenn
(Again, pretty simple. Vancouver, as much as their fans have enjoyed Schenn, should look to capitalize on Schenn’s solid season, and cash in for a 3rd rounder).

With these moves, you have a roster of; (with about 400K in space left)

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Mikheyev - Tavares - Kase
Debrusk - Kerfoot - Nylander
Engvall - Kampf - Spezza/Simmonds

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Braun/Schenn/Liljegren
Sandin - Schenn/Braun/Liljegren

Campbell
Mrazek
No way the current versions of Braun+Schenn is better than Dermott+Holl though

Would really love for the Leafs to get their deals done soon too. Get the players in early. Don't wait until the last minute.

They will probably do anything up front ASAP (I.e. trade Ritchie) but I don't think the Leafs are going to make any big moves up front. They may acquire a better 4th liner than Simmonds (or at least a 13th forward replacement for Ritchie), but I doubt they are seriously looking at anyone better than that.

I think they wait for defense. They are not in the market for anyone major, and they are going to want as much time as possible to evaluate Liljegren. They may even decide to just roll with Liljegren, who I think has looked really good and may even be ready for more minutes.

What would roughly the prospect equivalent value-wise be in our system? I’ve always liked Toffoli, he’s got a pretty solid contract too.

Montreal would probably want a guy like Hirvonen.

Solid trade for both teams, I do like it more for Calgary though considering Toffoli has another two years on his contract.

I suspect the Habs aren't looking at the next couple of years as a time to compete and Toffoli is likely happier out of there. Goodwill building.

They'll probably pick up a couple throw away vets in the off-season.

Will we be surprised if Price and Weber end up on LTIR for a few years?

Weber already has all his money.

Price is going to have to be creative.

I would have been extremely upset if the headline read that we traded our 2022 1st, a 5th, and say Alex Steeves for Toffoli. He's just not relevant when we have other gaps.

Toffoli is just not the type of player toronto need. Paying that price for a top 6 foward or the right player who will give whats leaf need, i do it anytime

The stats guys say our team is elite, Holl is one of our better defenders etc
Why would we want to.make a trade when everything is perfect except goaltending?
