We need more scoring/offensive punch upfront, push Kampf down to anchor a 4th line shut down line with Engvall and one of simmer or spezz.
A talent like kessel allows them to run 3 deep lines.

Engvall kampf spezz/Simmonds.
Rotate Spezza up to take draws on the 3rd line if need be, use Kase with Engvall and kampf to tilt the ice in the D zone.

I think the issue is defense and from what I've seen recently, goaltending.

Phil the Thrill has been an absolute playoff warrior throughout his career. Maybe some of that could rub off on our guys.

If I had to guess, at least one of Leafs management or the Thrill himself don't want to see a Kessel nameplate in the Leafs dressing room again

Goaltending is a clear issue. This has become very apparent. Both teams were sloppy tonight, both teams generated lots of chances, St Louis got a .919 save percentage out of their goalie, we got .848

This is happening way too often

They need a guy who can carry the puck as well as score and create off the rush, while also being able to play the game at Tavares’ speed. Kessel can do all those things, Mikheyev can get in first on the forecheck and create havoc.

That's for sure. He was great with Pittsburgh in the playoffs, but I think we have some really glaring needs on D at the moment which makes him a luxury at this point.

Willy can play anywhere LW or C, especially in a third line situation with favourable matchups

hes actually a very solid defender capable of playing 18+ minutes a night

He’s better than dermott and a different but similar player to Holl. Brings some of what we lost with Bogo leaving. Not a top end difference maker, but I don’t see any of those available atm anyway

He’s essentially Bogosian. I think we need a defender like that badly.
