So tried my hand at a “realistic” lead up to and deadline day for us.

Trade #1
TOR trades Nick Ritchie and Veeti Miettinen to PHI for Justin Braun. TOR retains 300K on Nick Ritchie.
(It’s been reported the Leafs won’t retain any more than 300K on Ritchie, as that is the buy out cost. Flyers have reported interest in Ritchie, as they are looking to add size up front, and get him at a reduced cap hit, while also picking up a solid prospect for a D-man they are expected to move)

Trade #2
TOR trade Travis Dermott to BOS for Jake Debrusk.
(TOR looking to add a F, BOS looking to add a LD. The two rivals help each other out by exchanging similar players for each other’s position of need)

Trade #3
TOR trades Justin Holl to LAK for a 3rd Round Pick
(Pretty simple. LAK is reportedly looking for a RD with term. They get one that fits the LA system relatively cheap).

Trade #4
TOR trades 3rd Round Pick to VAN for Luke Schenn
(Again, pretty simple. Vancouver, as much as their fans have enjoyed Schenn, should look to capitalize on Schenn’s solid season, and cash in for a 3rd rounder).

With these moves, you have a roster of; (with about 400K in space left)

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Mikheyev - Tavares - Kase
Debrusk - Kerfoot - Nylander
Engvall - Kampf - Spezza/Simmonds

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Braun/Schenn/Liljegren
Sandin - Schenn/Braun/Liljegren

One great thing about Toffoli is he still has 2 years after this one. Great amount of term. That is what Dubas should be looking for. When I first saw the deal, I wasn't sure of the length of Toffoli's contract. Had he been a rental, it would have been an overpay, which would have been horrible in terms of setting the market. But that much term, then the deal is fair and makes sense. No issue giving up a first for that amount of control of a good player.

Seems real light for Montreal trading away basically their only great F besides Suzuki locked up for 2.5 more seasons just over 4M.

Good on Calgary going big. No idea if JG will be back and they're legit good.

Montreal deal is good on both teams. Calgary gets immediately talent to add to an already deep forward group without subtracting from their lineup. Montreal is going no where this season and is heading into a reset. Wouldnt be surprised to see Petry and Chariot next for more picks and prospects.

1. I like Miettinen but I'm not adverse to trading him. I just don't care for Braun really... downgrade on Holl at this point.

2. I'm not huge on DeBrusk, but we could do worse for Derms. If him being traded means starting roles for Sandin/Liljegren count me in.

3. If Chiarot can get a 1st (lol) I sure as hell hope we can get more than a 3rd for a much better defenseman (how sad is that).

4. I'm not willing to spend a top-90 Pick on Schenn. His defense numbers look good this season, but watching him play the Leafs was another reminder of just how bad he is at everything besides protecting his net. He's the kind of guy that gets exploited in our system and potentially takes away minutes from Sandin/Liljgren.

Chiarot s a #4, hes not an elite d but hes physical and will give you everything he have.

Hes by far the best d in mtl this season and playing with Jeff "f***ing awful" Petry or an other #4 in savard against top line, still hard to look really good.

After dealing with Kessel retention, I really have no interest in doing that again. We could take back 2-3 contracts for them to help offset $$

I don't think Boston wants another LD, they have quite a few already.

I thought LAK were looking for a LD? They have Doughty, Roy, Durzi, Walker and Clarke in the system.

Maybe do something like Dermott for a 3rd.

Seems ok. Basically go from Holl, Dermott and Ritchie to Braun, Schenn and DeBrusk. Im not sure it's better but it does cut down on cap space going into next season without overly lowering value this season.

Holl is worth a lot more than a 3rd, so that is an easy pass. Also a lot of unnecessary moving parts TBH.

Toffoli picked up a 1st and a B prospect without retention (besides an expiring cap dump in Pitlick). I think that is about right for a guy like him right now. He is a solid 2nd line winger making solid 2nd line money.

Personally, I would have picked someone other than Heineman. He is not bad, but he doesn't have a ton of upside and I think he was a reach in the 2nd round. However, I guess getting traded twice means people either really like you, or really don't.

I guess this also takes Calgary off of the list of Ritchie suitors.

Solid trade for both teams, I do like it more for Calgary though considering Toffoli has another two years on his contract.

I think it's a good pick up for Calgary. I also liked how they didn't wait for the trade deadline
This gives them enough chance to integrate Tyler into the system

Toffoli also played for Sutter. Obviously there's some connection there. Plays a heavy kind of game

He's still just 29.

Great deal for both teams. Toffoli will do well in Calgary and Habs got a pick plus prospects.
Miller’s asking price just went up after this deal.
On another note, Kadri is really heating up for his contract year. Imagine Habs signing him in the off season.

Why would Kadri want to go to a rebuilding team at this stage in his career? He’s going to get paid wherever he goes.

he's RHD
depending on price I think he'd be worth exploring ...that whole team is a mess
would need cap going back so probably doesn't happen but still

i think he had made it clear he doesnt want to play in canada

his family is home in the states

Not bad. Would like our main D addition be better than Braun though.
