Take back two or three expiring contracts (that can potentially be buried?) for Ritchie and help PHI clear contract space? Sounds easy (too easy?) and fine enough.

Preparing to trade Giroux? Flyers send Briere to scout the Avalanche - Crossing Broad

A Below the radar trade addition first?

Might the Flyers be a buyer before they sell?

OK, that’s a little misleading, but if we’re putting puzzle pieces together, one of the things the Flyers really lack is size up front, and someone willing to go to the net to get those greasy, dirty goals.

On Jan. 7, the Toronto Maple Leafs put Nick Ritchie on waivers. He cleared and went to the Leafs Taxi squad, but now that Taxi squads have been eliminated, he was sent down to the Toronto Marlies, but has no interest playing in the AHL.

So he’s kind of been in hockey purgatory for the past month, plus.

Ritchie is 6-2, 230 pounds and plays heavy and physical hockey. He had a career-best 15 goals in 56 games for Boston last season and signed as a free-agent with Toronto in the offseason. But, his game doesn’t fit with the Leafs and now they’re stuck with him.

Or are they?

Sportsnet in Canada insider Elliotte Friedman reported yesterday that there’s been some traction about a potential trade for Ritchie.

While he didn’t mention the Flyers, wouldn’t this make a lot of sense?

He would add the size they are looking for, cost next to nothing to acquire him (the Leafs will take a bag of pucks to avoid having to buy him out in the offseason and have to have money count against their cap for the next two seasons), and, he’s signed through next season at a very manageable $1.375 million cap hit.

I have to imagine this is one of those low risk/high reward kind of moves that can have a bigger benefit next year. If I’m Chuck Fletcher, I make the call and get this done today.

A top pick of a 'prominent' NHL team is reportedly ruining his career over a video game addiction

I don’t know if it’s ever come out but I thought the rumor was Rubtsov was rumored to be the player.

I think he has been hampered more by injuries. He had shoulder surgery, a concussion, broke his nose, and then something with his girlfriend's family.

Injuries again stall progress of former Flyers first-round draft pick German Rubtsov | On the Fly

At this point, I think he just needs a change of scenery. Nothing against Philly on this one, but I think he just needs a new start and hopefully some consistency will come with that.

I would love if we could get Rubtsov if they are dumping contracts. I can't imagine they are overly motivated to keep him around anymore, and I would love to see if we can get something out of him.
I'd like to get three of Rubtsov, Strome, Sushko, or Sandin.

Can't imagine they have plans with any of the first three, and Sandin would've likely played more games by now if he was in the plans at all.

This takes the Leafs up to 47 contracts and the Flyers down to 47 ahead of whatever they get in the package for Giroux

Ritchie's Cap hit is $2.5 million. Someone went to Capfriendly, and looked up what Ritchie's Cap hit was, and saw what he is contributing to our cap right now. which is his buried penalty, not his cap hit.

That’s an interesting option.
Alternately, some of those spots could be used to sign our own, or FA’s after the Olympics.

Yes, but his Cap hit is constant. But you are correct, paying him $3.3 million, isn't peanuts for what he brings. We could be so lucky to unload him.

Gonna cost the Leafs a draft pick or prospect to get a team to take Ritchie and his contract. Playing in the AHL doesn't help. What a dud.

It’s not inconceivable for the Leafs to trade him for a larger Cap hit player, larger dollar value, who is permanently on LTIR. I don’t know who that might be, but a team could save on salary, actually gain a player, while the Leafs save on usable cap space.

That would be the best outcome for the Leafs. Similar trade to Tyler Johnson for Seabrook.

Toronto already traded Matt Martin at 2.5M. Martin was worst than ritchie. For dor a big physical presence, its posible someone try it for 1 season and maybe try to sign him long term at a cheaper price.

Target for toronto on trade deadline

Big target at foward
Giroux, pavelski,( will need a third team in the deal), hertl, miller

2nd group
Copp, rakell, reilly smith ( will need a 3rd team on a deal)

At d

Big target
Lindholm

2nd group
Manson
Chiarot
Braun
De haan
Miller

Depend how much they want to spend, you can find good upgrade this season.

Another greasy puck hound to draw penalties sounds like a good idea.

The second line is probably just in a slump mostly, but they have a great history with this type of player on their wing.

Clone Bunting.

Difference is Martin was liked by Lou Lam and he did not have the rep of being a lazy ass player. Seriously who is going to pay to take on a 2.5m cap hit and 3.3m in real dollars for a player playing in the AHL ??

Heard Chariot is on IR (maybe LTIR??).

Rielly Smith is interesting as rumour has it Eich may be coming back in a week or so in which case they need to shed salary. The other forwards are sweet but they won't come cheap, especially if you need teams to retain.

Lindholm will cost big time and will walk because we can't afford him. The path to the SC is going to be difficult. I would tread carefully at going big because we cannot afford a repeat of last year.
