It'd be nice to upgrade the blue line and add a forward if the fits are optimal and costs are low

For example bringing in a dman like Jacob Chychrun would be great, but so would Zach Whitecloud, Carson Soucy, Nick Jensen, Ian Cole, Alexandre Carrier or Justin Braun. Up front, I like guys like Tanner Jeannot, Brandon Hagel or even Barabanov if we're going cheap and skilled, or Forsberg, Bjorkstrand, Kempe or Namestnikov for more impactful guys.

Re: Muzzin-Rielly Pairing

2018-19 Top xGF% Leafs Pairings:

Note that Gardiner-Dermott and Marincin-Ozhiganov were both soft usage bottom pairings.

Chychrun is a good young offensive dmen but im not sure long term, hes really an upgrade over sandin.

Sandin production points by 60 minutes playes last 3 season is at 1.19
Chychrun last 3 year 1.06

Okay thats fine because sandin playing in a better team but chychrun production at the same age is at 0.67 pts/60 minutes played almost half of sandin production.

So maybe the best move on defensive side is just wait and see

Mentioned this in the earlier thread, but a negative on the "should the Leafs get Chychrun" is he isn't needed for the 1st PP Unit (they're not kicking Rielly off after giving him that huge extension). Which is going to limit to an extent his impact as an offensive centric D man.

The Leafs just need another Brodie. A safe minute munching guy.

Isn't he a more physical, bigger Brodie ??

An unyielding two-way defenceman, Jakob Chychrun is a rising star with a toolbox bursting at the seams. Consistently displays elite four-way skating ability and is not afraid to throw his weight around physically. Plays with poise and composure through high pressure situations and, with the puck on his stick, can direct the play up-ice. Exhibits a particularly potent shot that works its magic on the power play and on the forecheck. Excellent first pass and uses his vision and awareness to keep the puck moving in the direction of the opposition's tail or to a teammate with more time and space. Defensively adept at tracking the puck and staying a step ahead of the opposition. Proactive with his stick and body, exerting pressure on the opposition and forcing them to make hurried decisions.

All-in-all, a well-rounded two-way defender who competes with pro-level drive and makes his authoritative presence felt at both ends of the ice.

Even so, I can't see Leafs being the winner of any Chychrun sweepstakes. A more desperate team like the Oilers will pay more than the Leafs would be willing to pay.

I just think you really overated chychrun. No body with d playing more than 18 minute at even strenght who got a worst 5on5 impact this season

He was on the ice only on 10 of the 48 for the who should be the QB of this team. Hes in top 5 in most 5v5 goal against

Thats worst offensivly and defensivly than chiarot, savard, larsson.

I think you already considerate him as an elite d but for me he will never be an elite d or real #1 in NHL. Right now he would be at best d #4 if leafs trade for him behind rielly muzzin and brodie.

On the other hand, compare our dcorps to other contenders and we match up very well defensively but maybe are a little short offensively.

Wait what?

Namestnikov - 25yr old 3rd liner
Howden - 19yr old late 1st round pick with mediocre junior numbers
Hajek - 19yr old 2nd round pick with poor junior numbers

None of those assets are comparable to Sandin.

And they got Miller on top of McDonagh too!

Personally I think Brodie is better in his own end

He is playing for a pathetic team. Probably much better paired with a Muzzin or Brodie. Might be our 4th best dman today but could be better than most in the future. All depends on how the Leafs brass view him and the cost. I don't see it happening though.

Yeah I'm not sure Sandin would be on our radar if he was in Coyotes system, so anyone using Coyotes to bring Chychrun down, goes in one ear and out the other for me. The only complaint should be price if it becomes too high or the injury history. I don't see the injuries being an issue since he will be much more sheltered here by both our defence and back checking forwards.

Matt Roy should be the target.
  • Dubas has a history with LAK (Muzzin trade, Campbell/Clifford trade)
  • 3.15M for 2 seasons after this one
  • Currently 2nd in TOI for LAK
  • 6'1 RHD
  • LA has a glut of RD going forward with Doughty, Walker, Durzi, Clarke

Potentially a larger deal with Kempe added to play 2LW. Kempe and Nylander have history playing together going back to Sweden.

Deal starts with Dermott to help LA on LD immediately. Add Amirov or Robertson as a blue chip prospect. Ritchie for salary.

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Kempe-Tavares-Nylander
Mikheyev-Kampf-Kase
Simmonds-Kerfoot-Spezza

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Roy
Sandin-Liljegren/Holl

Why don't leaf fans understand how well Sandin is playing for his age and draft class?

He Ka playing. 3rd pair minutes. 15 min a night. We said the same about dermott. Gardiner was a star.

It’s a huge step to go from 3rd to first. Sandin is no where near where chych run was/is. I would like for him to be. But at this point he is a good. Not great nhl player.

what’s his contract worth next year? Chychryn level? Stars in his draft year got paid.

if he is that good for his age and draft year he should get paid right?
