Connor Murphy at 50 percent retained makes sense for the Leafs. A decent top 4 RHD to play with Muzz and shouldn't cost the world.

Who. Chia rot? He is from Hamilton. Played his entire career in canada

I know he’s from the GTA, but a lot of Habs players just wouldn’t do it. I remember reading something about that after the Tomas Plekanec trade and vice versa. But I’m sure for an opportunity at a cup, anything is possible

Well Plekanec was a career long Hab up until the trade to Toronto, so in that case a bit weird for him.

I went to high school with Chiarot. I'm not sure you could find someone who looked more bored in history class. Only heard him speak when he had to do a presentation. The teacher probably gave him overly generous grades for being on the Guelph Storm. For those reasons, he's not worth a 1st

Nick Foligno still hasn’t scored a goal since he was traded to the Leafs, so they can’t possibly do any worse this time around. Let’s hope they stop focusing on leadership and “killer instinct” and start focusing on good players who can legitimately move the dial.

I wouldn’t mind taking the Tampa Bay Lightning approach of acquiring controllable players on great contracts. The Bolts landed Blake Coleman for a season and a half at a $1.8 million cap hit, while Barclay Goodrow made just $925k. As we learned with Jake Muzzin, adding a solid contributor for two playoff runs is better than one.
Brandon Hagel, who reminds me a lot of Michael Bunting, is currently playing on Chicago’s top line. He carries a reasonable $1.5 million cap hit through 2023-24 and will be a restricted free agent when his deal expires. While it won’t be easy to pry a 23-year old on a bargain contract out of Chicago, it might be smarter to put a good package together for him rather than a pure rental.

I’m the president of the Tomas Hertl fan club — he’s a legitimate difference maker. I prefer him to Timo Meier, who is currently lighting up the scoresheet but would be awfully expensive to acquire due to the extra year on his contract. I’d also call about Kevin Fiala in Minnesota, but he’s not a lock to be moved, especially for futures. Jared McCann is worth a thought, but like Fiala, he’s probably getting a big raise this offseason.
Anthony Beauvillier, signed for a $4.15 million cap hit through 2023-24, would be a great fit on this Leafs team if the Islanders decided to listen to offers. Tyler Toffoli is also signed through 2023-24 on a cap hit just $100k higher than Beauvillier’s. Toffoli, currently playing on the left side for the Habs, has scored an impressive 28 goals in just 52 games last season. If the Habs commit to a full rebuild, I’d take him in a heartbeat.

Vancouver could potentially listen to offers for Bo Horvat, J.T. Miller, and Brock Boeser, but they’ll cost a fortune. Of the three, Miller makes the most sense as a left-side player who generates plenty of offense. I’d take him on my team any day, but he’s scored around a point-per-game rate in Vancouver, so he might price himself out of Toronto’s consideration. The Leafs gave up a first-round pick, Sean Durzi, and Carl Grundstrom for 1.5 seasons of Jake Muzzin. Would they give up a significant package that includes a protected first for J.T. Miller if they retained some salary?

pgrading the defense could prove to be difficult. The team needs more out of the Muzzin-Holl pairing; if they don’t start playing better hockey, it might be worth giving Liljegren a shot with Muzzin. It’s tough to find a right-shot defenseman who can match up against top competition, and I’d like to keep Brodie with Rielly.
Colin Miller (Buffalo), Justin Braun (Philadelphia), Ilya Lyubushkin (Arizona) could be worth exploring, but someone like Josh Manson (Anaheim) might end up being too pricey if he’s even moved at all. Giving up a first-round pick for a rental defenseman doesn’t sound too appetizing.

Hagel would be great and fits our cap quite easily this season without needing retention. I doubt he's available though. Kubalik is also another target from the Hawks that would be really good and wouldn't require a ton of retention or contracts moved out.

Guys like Miller, Hertl, Fiala, etc are all over 5M in cap hits and getting them retained to where it fits will be extremely expensive in assets.

for sure, Chiarot has been a hab for a while. Stranger things have happened but you don't really see Habs players waiving to get traded to Toronto, or Toronto players waiving to go to Montreal. At least I can't remember the last time it's happened where an NMC or NTC was in play.

It's only a 10-team NTC list for Chiarot, I'd be surprised if the Leafs were on it

If he can play right side well, I think he'd be a good target.

Edit: I guess he is on it.

So, Chicago is going to do us a favour then? It wouldn't cost the world, but the price would be significant enough for sure.

He's already signed an extension with Chicago, & that retention would be costly; would be an ideal fit though.

Agreed.

Can we please just keep our first round pick? At least don't move it for Ben Chiarot lol. The D is going to be fine.

They're not going to use it on Chiarot. Although they did trade one Foligno last year and I was very much against it... so who knows.

I will say the 1st round pick should be an asset used in a trade if it gives us a big upgrade somewhere, preferably NOT a rental but... say Doug Wilson goes dumb for a day and offers Hertl at 50% retained for our 1st and whatever cap dump we want...

Then sure that makes sense. I don't see that kind of scenario happening though and I'd rather just add another high end prospect to the pool. The team as constructed should be good enough to win if the core has actually figured it out.

This might not be a very popular option out there but if Vancouver was willing to retain 50% of Tyler Myers contract I’d be pretty interested in that. He has 2 years remaining on his current deal and even with his game slowing down these past two years he’s still a way more effective and better defencemen than Justin Holl.

Rielly - Brodie
Sandin - Myers
Muzzin - Liljegren

Justin Braun (RHD) from Phili could be a lowkey good rental pickup.

His 1.8m cap hit could be retained to be pretty cheap & he could be buried in d-zone starts & penalty killing. Assuming he'd be paired with Muzzin, a good chunk of his minutes could be left to the Leafs more mobile & offensively talented defensemen.

the leafs have been one of the best defenses int he league the past 2 years and you guys want to add absolute crap like Myers and Braun....into our top 4???

I don't even know what to say anymore.

I mean, i at least see some kind of argument with Chiarot - he was able to hack it decently when paired with Weber in a top matchup role last year - but Myers and Braun are bad depth dmen on atrocious defenses.
