That's terrible. The Caps will have no interest in a pending UFA they have no expectation of re-signing, and giving up a first rounder in the bargain.

Eller is the No. 2 center for the length of Backstrom's injury recovery period.

The OP didn't consider how this would impact the other team, nor the fact that they are playing well and won't make a major multi-player move for the present.

Dont think they can expect more for a rental than a 1st a 3/2nd center and Jensen is playing really solid top 4 hockey so far this season.

No need for Rielly for the Caps and this deal makes the team Worse as Caps dont have place for him in their PP unit.

While that is true it doesn't really help the leafs with the direction they are heading if they are trading Rielly. Jensen basically makes too much to play the 3rd pairing and blocks the development of guys like Liljegren. If the leafs are trading rielly they don't want 31/32 year old bottom 6/bottom 4 players in return.

Why do the Caps do this? Makes no sense

This is pretty bad from the Caps perspective.
-> We wouldn't even want to trade a first rounder for a Rielly on a rental. He won't get any PP time.
-> No need at all for Hutchinson
-> Ritchie would be a bottom-6 guy, which we don't need to spend $2.5 million on
-> Eller is a great #3 C, and Jensen is good too. No idea why we would essentially give them away.

Oh, I think both sides aren't getting a good deal. I just look at it from a Leaf perspective and have zero desire for those players.
