I think having Nylander having his place on that side wall is a factor.

1. Nylander is a better shooting threat and can fish the puck
2. Everyone knows the PP runs through Marner so it’s easier to keep a tighter gap on him to limit plays.
3. The players have spread out ownership on setting up plays and have increased their pace in the zone moving the puck around which has helped open up lanes which leads to:
5. They seem to be getting more pucks on net from different spots on the ice
6. Another part of this is that teams have to re scout Toronto’s PP without Marner as the QB. Teams will adjust eventually.

lol they also had a crazy hot streak last year with marner on that unit. so, no matter how many people say its better with marner off of it, its not changing. i wouldnt hold your breath.

Holy recency bias batman!!!!!!

Last year Mitch finished 4th in the NHL in points.
But he he finished 54th in PP points
And scored
ZERO
PP goals in 172+ minutes of PP time. Tied with me.

Dude has a weak shot.

The concern isn’t that he had a bad year on the power play though, it’s that he’s not a very effective power-play player, when compared to how effective he is at even strength.
I say he is PP2 when he returns.

I was hoping there was a way to slightly limit his ice time. I think he plays too many minutes and this may be a way to do it.

There's no chance they keep him off the PP1, but they should keep him away from the shooting positions and keep Nylander and Matthews where they are. Keep Marner where Kase has been and that's in front of the net if the pucks on the left side with Tavares in the bumper spot. This way Nylander/Matthews has the pass option to Marner at the goal line and he can give a quick one time pass to Tavares in the slot or look for something else if Tavares is covered. Then vice versa if the pucks on the right side and Tavares can hit Marner for the one timer or look for something else. This way we have our 2 better shooters where they belong and Marner and Tavares always moving which may cause some confusion/defensive breakdowns.

Marner lead the Leafs in PP assists last year. Not everyone job is to put the puck in the net, some players job is to set it up.

Noone is saying he isn't an assist producer just maybe score a fricken goal now and then or put someone there who can.
Or is expected goals more important?

He has been playing with top 5 league PP mates if you ask me.
Zero goals is unacceptable.

If the PP stays as prolific as it's been the real issue will be when Marner returns. Will Keefe/Dubas put him back on the first unit or put him on the second. Granted, it might be a small sample size but its screaming that for whatever reasons the PP works better with out Mitch. Will Keefe/Dubas play to his ego and re-insert him on PP1? If so it tells me pacifying players is more important than winning games.

Mitch is a great all around player. The team comes before his ego. At least it used too. I hope the PP stays prolific and we find out. I'm fine with analytics but if he's reinserted it will prove to me a lot of it BS.

At first glance I thought that Marner on the 1st PP was a given. But, maybe...today's PPP leaders in the NHL,

3rd OA: A.Matthews, 27 GP, 8G, 7A, 15 PPP
5th OA: W.Nylander, 30 GP, 5G, 9A, 14 PPP
Tie 15th OA: J.Tavares, 29 GP, 5G, 5A, 10 PPP
Tie 15th OA: M.Rielly, 30 GP, 1G, 9A, 10 PPP

That's pretty impressive stuff, and for me the surprise being Nylander's 9A, indicating that he's not simply a shooting threat.

You then have to drop down to,

Tie 58th(with many): M.Marner, 24GP, OG, 7A, 7 PPP
Tie 70th(with many): J.Spezza, 26GP, 3G, 3A, 6 PPP

With Nylander proving to be an adept part of PP1 and complimenting Rielly's abilities to move the puck, while offering a better shot, and PP2 not having a partner for Sandin/Muzzin to distribute the puck to the fellas whose job is to hammer it home, I think I'd play Marner on the 2nd PP (at least until the 1st cools off) to see if we can leverage his puck moving skills to help: Spezza (Right Point), Bunting, Kase, Ritchie (revolving forward group) and Sandin/Muzzin (Left Point). Spezza to take the draws and then rotate back, Mitch to leverage his skating and passing abilities, Bunting/Ritchie net front for garbage/tips (demanding one D covers, creating a 4 on 3), Kase half wall and Spezza/Sandin/Muzz point shots.

Minimum 50min PP time (190 players):

P/60

#2 Matthews 11.16
#6 Nylander 9.53
#27 Tavares 6.97
#29 Rielly 6.91
#48 Marner 5.83

Step 1 is to stop making Mitch the main entry man.

Let Auston and Willy be the main puck entry guys and go from there.

Which lines up rather closely to the point I was making. The first hasn't lost much in it's effectiveness during Marner's absence, and Marner going up against inferior PKer's on the second unit may elevate his effectiveness while offering our 2nd unit a 1st unit player who can help them produce at a higher rate. A very strong 1st and a stronger 2nd PP works for me. At the very least I'd try it until the 1st unit cools off.

Spezza looked more dangerous on the PP in a few games than Marner has all year. Versatility is king when you're running basically an all-star PP1.
Spezza also looked much worse than Marner has in the past on the powerplay.
If the 1st PP is going great, they may not change anything and I don't think that will be an issue. Some people suggesting not being on the 1st PP could be a problem for Marner's ego, so silly lmao.

Silly certainly sums it up, same with the thought that Keefe will play him anywhere he wants because of ????

How some arrive at these conclusions is boggling.

I was a teenager on these boards eons ago, it makes more sense if you chalk it up to the immediacy with which teens feel everything, and the angst that comes with it...if it's grown ass people, I don't know what to do with that lol.

No, the BS is speculation that Marner needs his ego pacified.
