I mean yeah, Matthews is better individually for sure. Especially at this moment in time. That said Fantilli (ppg after taking the 1C role with Monahan injury) and Johnson (on pace for over 72points in n 82 game schedule playing with mostly depth players) are top 6 guys right now with huge potential and we can't ignore the fact Mateychuk is also thrown in there. Well that and the fact we have 8 years of playoff data on Matthews so far and we don't really need to discuss how that's goneNot better than Auston Matthews and less proven come playoffs to have the statement "This makes Toronto a much better team come playoff time"
Neither are 1Cs yet who you can expect to go out and beat FLR, Tampa centers/defenses in a tight playoff series.
Johnson is a very good top 6 player and Fantilli is breaking into a top 6 player but they have no playoff experience, are very young and would have to step up to be top 4 players on the leafs.
They are too young to rely on to win with compared to having Matthews and hoping he can break out come playoffs based off his career regular season play being usually top 10-15ish player in the league since he joined.
So you're saying the Leafs will be no worse having them in their lineup for the playoffs? I mean, being honest, the Leafs recent playoff history WITH the studs hasn't exactly been the picture of dominance. Not better than Auston Matthews and less proven come playoffs to have the statement "This makes Toronto a much better team come playoff time"

So basically the objection is "they haven't proven themselves yet". While that's understandable under the circumstances, it's also worth pointing out that if they had already proven themselves this would be even more of an absurdly nonsensical proposal from Columbus' perspective.
Sure that is why the trade makes no sense. So basically the objection is "they haven't proven themselves yet". Keep It Simple Stupid . Fire Berube !!!Assuming Matthews hates playing in Berube's system is willing to waive his no-trade....
Matthews for Fantilli, Johnson, Mateychuk
Why Toronto does this - start retooling with getting back 2 top 6 centers. Matthews has injury concerns, so Leafs are managing risk. This also frees up cap space for McJesus in a few years.
Why Columbus does this - Helps with the playoff run, with Matthews, Monahan, Silinger as centers. Having the captain of team USA will help the team financially. Columbus has Cayden Lindstrom, Silinger and Matthews for the future is pretty nice for centers.
Cause he's not scoring as muchHow do you know Matthews hates playing in Berubes system?
Has he ever said he loves scoring?Cause he's not scoring as much
Cause he's not scoring as much
Well.... he doesn't have many assists, he's not that great defensively (see 4 nations final goal). He's contract value is from scoring goals, and if he's scoring goes down, that'll hurt the value of his next contract, which is coming up since he didn't sign for 8 years, like..... almost every other superstarHas he ever said he loves scoring?
Sounds like Toronto can get him cheap if he plays for Berube then.Well.... he doesn't have many assists, he's not that great defensively (see 4 nations final goal). I mean... I guess that the optimistic way of looking at it? But I'm guessing, his agent is probably like "The cap is going to go through the roofs and we'll lose out on so much money because of Berube...... let's get him fired"Sounds like Toronto can get him cheap if he plays for Berube then.
Jordan Kyrou has an HF account?!Keep It Simple Stupid . Fire Berube !!!

Sounds like he would prefer to stay in Toronto then, eh?I mean... I guess that the optimistic way of looking at it? But I'm guessing, his agent is probably like "The cap is going to go through the roofs and we'll lose out on so much money because of Berube...... let's get him fired"
