Matthews for Fantilli, Johnson, Mateychuk

Why Toronto does this - start retooling with getting back 2 top 6 centers. Matthews has injury concerns, so Leafs are managing risk. This also frees up cap space for McJesus in a few years.

Why Columbus does this - Helps with the playoff run, with Matthews, Monahan, Silinger as centers. Having the captain of team USA will help the team financially. Columbus has Cayden Lindstrom, Silinger and Matthews for the future is pretty nice for centers.

The three guys for CBJ dont do anything for the leafs come playoffs.

The time to sell Matthews has been missed. Summer of 2023 him and Nylander could have been moved for big packages to retool team within 3 years.

Now that matthews is signed, nylander signed, rielly signed, and marner and tavares likely signing LT based on reports we are locked with this group.

CBJ don't want to gove up so much youth for Matthews who has injury concerns every other year and only 3 years term at 13.25AAV

However leafs also cant run a top 9 with the current versions of Fantilli, & Kent Johnson and 34 year old Tavares as our top 3 centers and expect to get further in the playoffs then we usually do (R1 G7 exit)

This trade just would never happen in the real world for either team.

Not better than Auston Matthews and less proven come playoffs to have the statement "This makes Toronto a much better team come playoff time"

Neither are 1Cs yet who you can expect to go out and beat FLR, Tampa centers/defenses in a tight playoff series.

Johnson is a very good top 6 player and Fantilli is breaking into a top 6 player but they have no playoff experience, are very young and would have to step up to be top 4 players on the leafs.

They are too young to rely on to win with compared to having Matthews and hoping he can break out come playoffs based off his career regular season play being usually top 10-15ish player in the league since he joined.

So basically the objection is "they haven't proven themselves yet". While that's understandable under the circumstances, it's also worth pointing out that if they had already proven themselves this would be even more of an absurdly nonsensical proposal from Columbus' perspective.
