Let me put it this way,

Unless you believe this guy just magically peaked at age 30, and everything else was just noise... his resume speaks for itself.

Do you think Hedman getting injured and him actually getting more offensive zone starts and PP1 time had anything to do with it or are you just looking at his stats without context?

Both the trade and the $AAV are very reasonable, IMO. However, 8 years contract at 30 is very risky. I don’t think any team should be handing that length of contract out at players 30 or older, so I’m not just piling on the Leafs.
You’re totally accurate with that assessment. 8 years is a long time, but that’s how they keep the AAV low.

Nice job Leafs.

Everyone was worried about overpaying for Raddysh, but if he can repeat last season and look like a true #1, then the Leafs just got a top pair D for no assets and 8.5m.

He's never been a #1 and i'm sure the leafs don't expect him to be one. Did you see him play in the playoffs? He was near invisible.

8.5m is no.2 defenseman money these days. No.1 defensemen are getting 12+ and Franchise defenseman are getting 15+

The contract is fine if you have confidence last years level is sustainable. If he turns into a pumpkin again then obviously you have a problem.

Really like that deal for TOR. Last two years will likely feel some pain, but $8.5M will 100% be 2nd pair d-man money here in the near future. Good on Chayka for being aggressive and getting the best of a pretty poor UFA pool for essentially no assets. Sends the right message to the team, and fits with the core.

I think within the self-imposed confines Toronto finds itself in (ownership mandate not to rebuild, no 1sts in next two drafts) this is sensible but on a broader scale it's a bad investment. It's a dumb move but it's at least sensibly dumb with what they're trying to achieve. What they're trying to achieve is strategically dubious but within those confines this is a good way to work towards that goal.

He should help their PP but it doesn't really solve the core problem which is that they don't have a #1D and their blue line is old and locked up for a long time. All it cost was money but they're still stuck in a spot where their only valuable trade chip is Knies and that's just opening up another roster hole even if there's a magical trade for a #1D out there.

Maybe one day, but there's not a single dman in the NHL making more than 11.5M as of today.

He was #1 on the the TBL last year in TOI and had 70 points.

If you feel like having a pedantic debate about what a true #1D is then find a different dance partner.

If teams thought last year was sustainable he would be getting 13+ million
