Chris Johnston already reported the Sens had a seperate deal (not Buffalo) to move Murray at 25% retention. If the Leafs didn't pull the trigger, he was going elsewhere with that retention. Not sure if another team could've got involved, but 50% was never going to happen with Ottawa alone. For the first time in awhile it seems like they actually do need cap space too.

To be fair nobody I’ve read can rationalize why we only got 25 percent retention, except here of course.

Ottawa was never going to take on more. It's been reported that every team they talked to said "25% is the highest retention we'll go." Now maybe Dubas could've negotiated better but now I don't think that that number was going to ever change. He should've extracted higher picks though that's for sure.

Then move on! Was there a gun to our head, I thought we had a plan? Look, you point to me one post wherein anyone though Murray was worth a 25 percent only retention and I’ll stand down. It’s just revisionism now.

CJ just said on his podcast today there was another offer for Murray at 25%, Leafs were never going to get 50% retention.

It’s not and it wasn’t. I could live with it more if we managed to extract a 2nd rounder out of Ottawa, but apparently Dubas was incapable of doing so. End of the day what we got for taking Murray didn’t make it worth it. Now the only way it looks good is in the unlikely scenario that Murray plays good.

And that’s the problem. you don’t know.
Murray, Samsonov, Georgiev, Francouz, Andersen, Raanta, Fleury, Gustavsson are goalies signed/traded for in the last couple years by 4 of the top 5 teams last year.

Who will be the best goalie over the next few years? Who will be the best goalie to win in the playoffs the next few years? You are right, I don't know. Do you?
