Who is that someone else?

It's not like the Leafs were going to be able to get two experienced goalies for small enough number to allow them to chase a difference maker in FA. Sure, Murray has 2 years on his deal but even that fits our cap structure because Matthews and Nylander are both FAs after 2 seasons, along with a handful of other players (e.g. Muzzin & Brodie), which will allow them to get creative then.

At the end of the day, the Leafs were always going to be hamstrung cap-wise this off-season and most likely the next as well. The fact they were able to get an experienced goalie to fit in during this timeframe is a good thing.

Now, the only thing they need to do is sign Sandin and fit his contract under the cap somehow.

This offseason Leafs fan should be getting excited about new faces like Robertson, Anderson, and Steeves potentially making the cut and Sandin/Liljegren developing, not Free Agent signings.
Good post!

IMHO if anyone wants to dump on Dubas (don't all rush the stage at once LOL), then do it because you could argue that he's pretty much neglected the most important position on the team since day one. He inherited Andersen, rode him until his contract ran out and walked for nothing instead of pivoting from him earlier. He did make a good move by getting Campbell but in the end he wasn't the answer either and that put us in the position we were in two days ago.

Considering the situation we were in at the beginning of the week, he's done good work IMO getting us the duo we have today. But the counterpoint is that it's his inaction re. the goaltending position is what put us in this shitty spot of having to scramble in the first place. So if Dubas was hired this Monday, hey nice job with the goalies dude. But considering he's been on the job for a long time now, the fact that we had to scramble to get any goalies at all in the last few days is 100% on him and in that context, it's hard to be impressed.

Kevin Woodley from InGoal Magazine was on Leafs Lunch today. (If the link below does not work, you can find it on TSN 1050's podcasts.) I found it very informative about goaltending in general and Murray and Samsonov in particular.

GSAx last season:

Murray: +3.2
Campbell: -2.3
Talbot: -5.8
Georgiev: -6.8
Samsonov: -12.1

Georgiev instead also would have essentially cost us 3rd + 3rd + 3rd + 5th + 7th.
All of them carry their own risks.

At least Dubas picked up Samsonov today as a healthy back up. He'll likely end up playing 50 games.

Someone has to explain to me why Murray @ $4.7 is better than Campbell @ $5... I don't get it. What in the fck are we going to do with $312,500?

I do not dislike the Samsonov signing, but could he not have fit with Campbell as well?

It's the term not the AAV. The leafs wouldn't sign him to a deal beyond 2 years.

The goalies keep getting the blame for playoff failures despite the offense fizzling out in elimination games.

Yeah took me a day to move on. Some of the pro arguments did not help. I mean one poster claimed the Sens had zero leverage when the rumours started in the morning and then was defending the trade, ignoring that the retention and sweetener was not enough. I mean some fans were wanting Formenton, Norris, Pinto, Zub, a 1st, 75% retention etc.

No ill will toward Murray. Hope he stays healthy and helps us in the playoffs.
Well there is your problem...never listen to "some fans." When you set your expectations unreasonably high, coming away disappointed is nearly always guaranteed.

That was quick.

If AM signs with Kings, won’t we have room to sign McD and Drai when their contracts are up since JT’s contract will be over too.
Someone's gonna have to explain to me how LAs D and G situation will make it appealing for AM to sign there bc I don't see it.

Buffalo Sabres goalie coach used to work for Pittsburgh when Murray was there... good sign that he likely pushed Buffalo GM Kevyn Adam's to try to acquire Murray.

I think the goalie situation is as good as it could've gotten honestly, considering our cap situation. Two players on show me contracts that both were once considered to be top tier goalies. One only 28. The other only 25. Took Jacob Markstrom sometime to find his game at the NHL level after he was considered the best goalie prospect in the world. There really wasn't alot of better options out there that we could afford. Unless you wanted 6'1, sub .900 sv% Georgiev.

We never seem to have a good plan in place for the goal, do we? I personally don't think that Murray + Samsanov is the answer and I think we have indeed gotten worse than last season. It's disheartening.

Oh well, all we can do is HOPE now.

I am more mad about taking away cap space to make a run at a guy like Palat more than the sweetener after thinking about it some more.

Marleau at his full cap hit is a 1st rounder. Marleau is not same as Murray though. Marleau completely finished and cost 6 million. Murray is 28 and capable of regaining form at 4.7 mil.

If you look at Marleau, we wouldn't give Canes a 1st rounder if we retained 25%. This is also very strong draft year, so maybe a 3rd is same as a 2nd in some other years. The sweetener angle is hard to judge. But it is still dumb to have that 4.7 on the cap right now.

If you take past standings, Sens 3rd is like a Leafs 2nd, so the sweetener we got from Sens is the same as the sweetener we would have given with Marleau @ 25% after you make the final adjustment for strong draft year.

I believe the Leafs would have preferred the retention as well but it was not on the table. I think that's also why the Brown deal with Edmonton fell through. $3.5M in dead cap for two more years and they are a low revenue team.

Going with Comrie and Samsonov would have been much better and cheaper. I have little faith that Murray is coming back to form. He is damaged goods at this point and not worth that much cap space.

If he truly is damaged good then he will find his way onto LTIR and we gain 4.75M in cap space while having Samsonov, 3rd + 7th to relay into another goalie. I dont see the downside.
