Without looking it up I'm going to guess Murray is owed a big signing bonus on Wednesday and that's why Ottawa was in such a rush to get this done?

Why else wouldn't Dubas' have waited to see what shakes out with free agents?
No bonus at all.

Lets put out a hypothetical here. If Murray can remain healthy, he will definitely be a playoff goalie that the Maple Leafs sorely need. The Leafs are so close to being a Stanley Cup team, so maybe this is the trade that puts your team over the edge? Dubas is making a gamble. But it might just be the gamble the leafs need punch a ticket into the finals.
But he still overpaid in the trade (by only receiving those picks) and also is overpaying Murray in terms of cap hit. There’s only downside to this and at best it comes out even for the leafs, and that’s if Murray is healthy, plays 55 games and posts a .910 which at this point seems very unlikely

The team will have to outscore their problems from the back end every single game.

More high scoring games baby.

Want my prediction?

- Dubas trades Kerfoot/Holl (5.5 approx out). THen goes bargain bin shopping to fill roster spots after UFA market is done and only leftovers are there

- his fans go about saying how great dubas is

- leafs struggle to make the playoffs or if they do they get bounced in the 1st round

- people here again claim goalie was garbage, or core didn't show up or whatever.... dubas goes blame free. Rinse and Repeat

No one will ever recognize that dubas has screwed the pooch from the beginning since he has been a GM; and "quality" secondary scoring/depth pieces are required in the NHL to have success. These pieces don't come cheap.

Imagine getting handed a team with this young core and doing nothing with it aside from adding negative value and letting talent leave for nothing.

I just do not understand how he has escaped so many years with doing nothing with our best chance in decades to make a run.

Even if you don't fault him (somehow), how have we not decided to shake things up just in the hopes of a different outcome?

I am seeing a lot of fans here wishing Toronto could have gotten Sanderson.

Are you serious?

Sanderson is looking like he is going to be a top pairing defensemen. He is a really good prospect.

Did anyone think they would get Sanderson just so Ottawa could rid themselves of Murray?

Ah yes, all aboard the struggle to make the playoffs bit again

The time to cry is after you get hit not before you wusses.

If I see a grizzly I prefer to run as fast as I can before he sees me. I don't wait for him to come close to be and punch me before I start running.

If that is being a wuss then so be it

Ceiling is higher but why would you compare him to Mrazek? compare to Mrazek there are 40 other goalies who's celing is higher

We didn't need to make this trade, that's what upsetting. Dubas could have easily waited out until Ottawa bought him off and then sign him for significantly less

3rd and 7th means nothing to us. We are not rebuilding. We were in control, yet he gets bent over by Ottawa
To show that we seem to better off than we were a week ago, isn't it obvious? Two trades, Mrazek out, Murray in which looks to be a clear win so pretty simple stuff really.

Saying that there are 40 goalies with a higher than ceiling Murray and his multiple cup rings and .921 SV% over 50+ games is LOL hyperbole to the nth degree. Let's be serious here shall we?

I don't see that there's any guarantee Ottawa buys out Murray. Why isn't an option for Ottawa to just hang on to him? Maybe he bounces back and they're glad they did, or they trade him a few months from now when his value is maybe much higher than it is now. Or are they in some sort of cap crunch situation that I'm not aware of?

Wasn't it written somewhere that they budgeted $7M for goalies? Blackwood could still be in the conversation.

He can't be going into this season with a goalie that was retained and added to as your #1.

I'm stepping off of the ledge for 30 seconds.

Still a shit trade.

He's overpaid until he wins you a cup. Then he's a steal. Either way, we retain salary. So the Leafs are getting a slight discount. When he played for us last year, he played well even though our defence was at times porous. I hope he remains healthy for you guys. I wouldn't count him out just yet. Remember, he chose to go to Toronto.

It’s quite clear that Tampering has occurred. Would you have preferred Murray be traded elsewhere, Campbell signs with EDM, Keumper goes to NJ or Washington and we are left with a Tandem of Kallgren and a backup from UFA?

Obviously the leafs know Campbell and Keumper are signing else where otherwise the deal wouldn’t happen today.

I can't understand the thinking

I can understand being bribed to take somebody bad but we haven't got anything of major significance back and his cap hit is still sky high for what Murray has been the last few years

These guys must genuinely believe Murray is still good

God help us all if this is our talent evaluation

Throw that all out the window. If Murray wasn't a Soo Greyhound 10 years ago he isn't a Leaf today. It's just a guy they know, textbook nepotism.

I think people are being ironic, that wouldn't be realistic. But the trade value we got back, is horrible. He pissed me off when he traded our first rounder at the draft and now this trade, makes me have zero support for him. The job is too big for him.

The team just set a franchise record for wins and points last season - I don't think you can look at the team he inherited and the team now and say its worse.

At least Dubas hasn't left any complete boat anchor immovable contracts for his successor.

The worst are Tavares, Muzzin, and Murray (lol!). Tavares being 2 years left and the others 1 year. There's an opportunity for a big retool with some intriguing prospects on the horizon, so it's not all doom and gloom.

Just seems like it will be a frustrating season upcoming, chasing their tail.
The Leafs are young and still improving for the most part and can run it back close to as is should they choose.

Their other 3 main challengers in the Atlantic are losing key people....

Stavros was also the guy that refused to sign the greatest hockey player of all time since he questioned the profit margin of doing so, though.
Gretz was never coming back to Canada , he was just using the Leafs to up his offer then whined how he took a pay cut to go to NY .
