Why would Ottawa want Mrazek? Ottawa has Anton Forsberg who was an absolute stud for them and cheap

Maybe as a backup I don't know I guess they got rid of him for less and didn't have to take cost so honestly good for them.

Just shocked

I thought we overpaid for Foligno, but I thought he was the right player. Didn't work out at the end of the day, but I was cautiously optimistic at the time of that trade.

Here we have the wrong player and have somehow overpaid despite only giving up future considerations.

Not entirely sure how I should feel about the trade itself. On first glance, it's risky with potential cap implications. Plus, we didn't get enough back from Ottawa for liberating them of that contract

On the positive, after the Nylander/marner signing fiasco, Dubas has had to rebuild his image with agents as not being a complete pushover . I remember Ilya's agent "joking" when he first signed here that Dubas was going to hand him a big fat longterm extension. That's not happening

I really liked Jack Campbell and wanted him resigned, but him and his agent were playing chicken with Dubas. If he really wanted to be here (and I do think he wanted to), they should have stopped f***ing around and signed. Dubas was done with the bullshit and moved on, which in itself was an important move by management and helps to set a new precedence for future signings.

Just my 2 cents. Hope Matt bounces back with a better team in front of him.

And he still couldn't save Knob Hill Farms.

Wasn't Ballard still alive when the 99 trade was to go down? Regardless, 5 conference finals, Potvin, CuJo, Belfour vs ????? Rest my case.

IMHO Matthews Marner JT Nylander +++ should be a conference final contender for the last 3 years and we didn't even exit Rd1

Lets put out a hypothetical here. If Murray can remain healthy, he will definitely be a playoff goalie that the Maple Leafs sorely need. The Leafs are so close to being a Stanley Cup team, so maybe this is the trade that puts your team over the edge? Dubas is making a gamble. But it might just be the gamble the leafs need punch a ticket into the finals.

Perhaps if we had some or all of those extra dollars, we might have been able to add/retain a couple of players who would allow us to actually win a round in the playoffs.

If you're satisfied with the team's performance to date, you're entitled to that viewpoint. I am not. Kyle Dubas inherited one of the best situations a new GM could possibly be presented. He had star talent and a team on the rise which was already a playoff team. Few GMs start from that position, He didn't have a rebuilding project, he didn't have an old team in need of a teardown. Despite this, he has not been able to win a playoff round so far. I believe that frequent overpayment of players is a key reason for the team's failures.
Maybe Dubas will put on skates and have his stars show up in game 7. Maybe the goalies will make a save.

He can only build a team, and the team he builds consistently is amazing until the playoffs in which they choke.

The fact that anyone at all is defending this is crazy to me. Can you link me to some twitters of some Leafs media folks who actually have good takes on this?

SDPN isn't really mainstream media to the same degree.

Most have just been mocking Dubas and the soo greyhounds. But Carlo has been the most critical, Sid Sixero has questioned it haha, there’s others I briefly looked

The only thing I'll say to counter this is that Murray plays a better suited game for this team. Mrazek was frenetic and unpredictable.
i was told last summer Pistol Pete's playing style suited our defensive structure , lol

Murray sucks and has sucked for years that's why Pitt dumped him .

How TF did we not get 50% why couldn't we have just paid jack wtf is this shit.

We basically just lit that first round pick on fire

This logic makes sense if you think campbell, mrazek and Murray are all comparable performance-wise.

The ONLY way this move makes sense is that Dubas thinks Murray is a much better goalie than the other two.

So here we are, this deal wasn’t an asset move, it was a hockey move. Dubas thinks the team is better with Murray in net.

Dubas has Murray > kuemper > campbell > Samsonov > mrazek.

Dubas thinks Murray was the best goalie available to him.

I have no idea if he’s right, but that’s got to be the logic on this deal

Just curious, we’re people actually comfortable giving Campbell 5+ mill x 5 years?

Murray had better stats on a significantly worse team up until the last 2 games of a lost season.

Not to mention Campbell has his own injury concerns.

Why would anyone want to commit that much term to a mediocre goalie?

I understand hating this deal, but I don’t understand everyone who says “couldn’t we have just spent a little more to keep Campbell”

I actually kind of like Murray as a reclamation project. I like his track record, I think his struggles have been a little overstated (due to injuries and playing with a terrible team) and I think being reunited with some familiar faces could help. So from that standpoint I don’t mind this deal.

But still… with where this team is at right now, going into next season with Matt Murray and Kjallgren as your tandem is unacceptable. Despite the potential upside with Murray, there is just way too much risk with this scenario. There has got to be more coming or else this could be a massive failure.

And he still couldn't save Knob Hill Farms.
I'm thinking about this at large instead of finishing a whitepaper that I need to finish, but for all Stavro's faults consider the owners that preceded and succeeded him and holy shit does it make him look amazing by comparison.

I would have preferred 50% with no sweetener.

I haven't been a pro Dubas guy, but I've given him the benefit of the doubt up until now. This is just f***ed.

When this blows up in their face Shanahan has to be canned as well.

If this were a Steve Stavros Leafs team. Dubas would have been canned long ago and I think that's a very very safe bet. How many conference finals was it with him as owner? 5 I think. Anyways, gonna go have a drink. Total gut punch now that it's sunk in.
Now that you mention Stavros, I'm reminded of how good Ken Dryden was as president of the team. Miss those days and teams.

I think their whole aim was to not take any salary back. If the Buffalo deal went through they would have just retained and swapped picks. So they wouldn’t be taking any salary back.

It’s not even about the Cap Hit for the Sens. It’s the actual money. They do not want to pay Murray his $7+ million in actual money on a back loaded contract. Otherwise they would have let him sit in the minors or as their back up.

Dubas should have really played on the ability to take on the contract but also not have a fear of paying Murray his actual salary owed to get a better sweetner

At 50% retained, you could have grabbed a tandem goalie and used the extra space to upgrade the team.

Murray at 4.7M puts the squeeze on the cap again.

Want my prediction?

- Dubas trades Kerfoot/Holl (5.5 approx out). THen goes bargain bin shopping to fill roster spots after UFA market is done and only leftovers are there

- his fans go about saying how great dubas is

- leafs struggle to make the playoffs or if they do they get bounced in the 1st round

- people here again claim goalie was garbage, or core didn't show up or whatever.... dubas goes blame free. Rinse and Repeat

No one will ever recognize that dubas has screwed the pooch from the beginning since he has been a GM; and "quality" secondary scoring/depth pieces are required in the NHL to have success. These pieces don't come cheap.

Rogers internet went down, Dubas couldn't consult Alexa or Google and came up with this lesser value than what Buffalo made a deal for. Really the last post on this. I am out, later.

Murray's going to regret not going to Buffalo .. He's going to have some serious heat on him.
That's the thing about a reclamation project. This is the net for the Toronto Maple Leafs, quite possibly the biggest pressure cooker in the NHL. Hope he's got the fire in him, that contract and our playoff expectations are going to be a heavy load to carry all while trying to rebuild his career.

Seems like we've set him up for failure.
