Without looking it up I'm going to guess Murray is owed a big signing bonus on Wednesday and that's why Ottawa was in such a rush to get this done?

Why else wouldn't Dubas' have waited to see what shakes out with free agents?

With that leverage and Ottawa showing their hand last season by throwing Murray on waivers, anyone would have imagined more retention and more substantial sweetening of this deal.

Solid plan. I just have one question? Which goalie got us to the playoffs?
Bah, such as easy question!

If this were a Steve Stavros Leafs team. Dubas would have been canned long ago and I think that's a very very safe bet. How many conference finals was it with him as owner? 5 I think. Anyways, gonna go have a drink. Total gut punch now that it's sunk in.
Stavros was also the guy that refused to sign the greatest hockey player of all time since he questioned the profit margin of doing so, though.

When we cleared the space we had to be thinking husso right? Because if not couldn't we have just done this trade straight up mrazek for Murray at 25%?

Like there's no way we were like let's clear this space for Matt Murray right?

I think you’re wrong on the media. Have you checked Twitter? Most of the pundits are criticizing the deal. I’ve never really seen this many Leafs media personalities openly criticize Dubas. Hell even SDPN is having an emergency podcast tomorrow

The fact that anyone at all is defending this is crazy to me. Can you link me to some twitters of some Leafs media folks who actually have good takes on this?

SDPN isn't really mainstream media to the same degree.

And yet we still finished 4th overall in the league with close to the worst goaltending. Crazy that he can "overpay" good players slightly and still manage to win games.

Perhaps if we had some or all of those extra dollars, we might have been able to add/retain a couple of players who would allow us to actually win a round in the playoffs.

If you're satisfied with the team's performance to date, you're entitled to that viewpoint. I am not. Kyle Dubas inherited one of the best situations a new GM could possibly be presented. He had star talent and a team on the rise which was already a playoff team. Few GMs start from that position, He didn't have a rebuilding project, he didn't have an old team in need of a teardown. Despite this, he has not been able to win a playoff round so far. I believe that frequent overpayment of players is a key reason for the team's failures.

If you took a second to breath you may notice there aren’t many Leaf fans, Dubas fans included, that are applauding this deal.

There is some reason for optimism in the player if you really want to see the genius in it. That, however, is no excuse for the poor deal Dubas made.
People who are so heavily fixated on the GM rarely can see.....especially if it is outside their "hate bubble".

This trait is exacerbated with an appearance by more "bubble boys".

Why would Ottawa want Mrazek? Ottawa has Anton Forsberg who was an absolute stud for them and cheap

if it was 50% retain that would be one thing but 25% go out and sign Campbell for that price or go $5 for Jack or Kuemper.

Dubas got fleeced by Dorion and that is something not to be thrilled about

I can't understand the thinking

I can understand being bribed to take somebody bad but we haven't got anything of major significance back and his cap hit is still sky high for what Murray has been the last few years

These guys must genuinely believe Murray is still good

God help us all if this is our talent evaluation

they all work for the same parent company , expect the insiders led by Elliot to start brainstorming how to spin this

i can't fathom how anyone can defend this deal , we basically traded more to get rid of a bad injury prone goalie than we got back for a bad injury prone goalie who makes 1m more

as little as i think of Dubas i still can't believe he was stupid enough to make this trade

The only thing I'll say to counter this is that Murray plays a better suited game for this team. Mrazek was frenetic and unpredictable.

I just don;t understand why Murray was his first option. even if there's a deal that could be made Dubas should have seen how the market went or what others would cost. hell giving up a little for a better chance over taking assets and cap space for free if the return is f***ing Matt Murray who seems to not be the goalie he was in PIT before they also moved on from

Hubris

He lowballed and dicked around Campbell because ofcourse he did. hubris!

Other teams moved quickly to grab goalies and the market saturated. Campbell basically told dubas to go where teh sun don't shine after getting crapped on by dubas

So here we are....

Dubas has screwed the Leafs and the bright future right from the RFA signings overpayments, draft picks traded for nothing, and now this. As far as I am concerned dubas is a saboteur to the leafs. Period!
