The proposed deal to Buffalo that Murray nixed via his NTC

Sabres tried to acquire two-time Stanley Cup champion Matt Murray of the Ottawa Senators. A source confirmed the report by Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet that Murray blocked the move with his 10-team no trade list, which included Buffalo.

Additionally, the deal would have included Ottawa retaining salary, and Buffalo flipping the 16th pick of the first round for Ottawa 7th overall, according to Darren Dreger of TSN.

Well all we can do is hope he returns to form ya know? I'm done freaking out about it now, I dislike the entire season hanging on a goalie finding his game again, but here we are.

Apparently he had a 6 week window last season where he posted a .941 save % on a twrrible Ottawa team so I mean there is some hope boys and girls.

It's just unfortunate again, this is such a huge gamble, this is no sure thing, we could just have easily downgraded the position and with our window getting smaller and smaller its a tough pill to swallow that we have to rely on a project goalie to bring us to the promise land.

But all we can do is hope it works out guys, its literally all we can do. Now go out and get Blackwood as backup Dubas.

If Murray comes in and starts winning folks will stop caring pretty quickly. He's got the ability to, and has obviously passed the medical exam, so we as fans can only do so.

I think folks also forgotten how bad Leafs goaltending was for the entirety of 2022 so far too - Jack had a very underwhelming second half
This is not about Murray turning the corner, it is about Dubas not taking advantage of the situation. Everyone saw the Murray Deal between Sens and Sabres. That should be the bottom for Dubas and somehow, Dubas made a deal that is worst than the Sens and Sabres deal.

It’s Matt Murray, a two-time Stanley Cup champion from his days in Pittsburgh. But Murray also comes with a ton of baggage, both a history of injuries and a criticism that he has lost his game the past couple of years in Ottawa.

He comes with a high cap hit, too — $6.25 million (U.S.) for the next two seasons — though the Ottawa Senators retained 25 per cent of his salary. The Leafs got some sweeteners in the deal, a third-round pick in 2023, and a seventh-round pick in 2024, while they gave up “future considerations.”

Toronto will carry a $4.6875 million cap hit on the books, leaving them with about $6.36 million of cap space.

GM Kyle Dubas had to use the trade market because it looked as if the free agent market wasn’t going to be kind to the Leafs. Jack Campbell appeared to be on his way to the Edmonton Oilers, speculation being that he was up for a $5 million a year deal. Stanley Cup champion Darcy Kuemper was said to be heading to Washington, though the Capitals did make things interesting by failing to qualify their starter, Ilya Samsonov, who — like Murray — had an underwhelming 2021-22 season.

Whether the Leafs believe Murray is a No. 1 or backup won’t be known until the wheeling and dealing is done. The Leafs used Erik Källgren and Joe Woll as backups last season, and GM Kyle Dubas has said he wouldn’t be afraid to use either this year.

.....................

Both Dubas and coach Sheldon Keefe are quite familiar with Murray, who was their goaltender when the three were all in similar roles in the OHL with the Soo Greyhounds.

A Thunder Bay native, Murray was drafted 83rd overall by Pittsburgh in 2012 and would go on to supplant Marc-Andre Fleury as the Penguins top goalie in successful Cup runs in 2016 and 2017. He signed with Ottawa, a four-year, $25 million deal in 2020. But that’s when things started to go off the rails. The Senators weren’t very good, and with a leaky defence, Murray was exposed and lost his confidence.

Things got so bad, he was waived this past season, with no takers. He finished the season with a concussion, though he did try to work his way back for May when Team Canada came calling for the world championships.

For his career, Murray sports a 132-78-22 record, with a 2.77 goals-against average and .911 save percentage. But last year, he was 5-12-2, 3.05, .906.

Even with his championship pedigree, Murray promises to be a bit of reclamation project, though at just 28 there would appear to be a great deal of upside. The Leafs play a tighter defence than the Senators, and can often outscore their mistakes. Both should help Murray, and new goalie coach Curtis Sanford, navigate their path.

Murray is terrible (downgrade from Jack)
Murray is expensive thanks to sub-50% retention (bigger cap than Mrazek)
We got peanuts back in assets
We helped a divisional rival in Ottawa who presumably had no other options

We're paying more for worse goaltending with no significant sweetener in a situation where we had all the leverage.

Insane.

Man I always forget how damn dramatic everyone is.

I'm disappointed in *only* getting back a 3rd with 25% retention as from our perspective it appeared like we had Ottawa over a barrel, but its not even remotely a bad trade. It's not close to a win as we took on all the risk, but we got paid to take on a 28 year old starting capable goalie with 2 cup rings. I can't believe (well I mean, it is HFLeafs) people are saying things like: "The worst deal Dubas has ever made" like the Foligno deal didn't happen.

We got paid to take on a potential #1 goalie at a 25% cap hit. The return was light, but again, we got paid to take on a #1 goalie lol.
Nailed it. I was hoping for better as well but it's not bad at all. Oh, and never ever forget how dramatic people can be in this place.

This deal is super risky and they have to be banking on his big game experience.

His timeline reads as tons of early success at the start, then hits a rough middle with some family tragedy and injuries. We have to hope we're now aquiring him on the way back up as he was better last season and he's very familiar with one of our goalie coachs.

On paper the value of the trade looks bad but I have some weird feeling Murray is going to be great for us.

Really pulling for Murray

But he's in the same level as Reimer without the contract. He has had multiple concussions and head injuries

Bourne also thinks Nylander is trash, Liljegren is an AHL player, and hates the Leafs for firing him.

Bourne's a clown.

The logic here is that it's only a 2 year deal, his cap hit makes him 17th in starting goalie salary, he was better than Campbell last season behind a worse team and they must have assurances from Sanford and Elkin that there are improvements to be made.

This is worse than my wildest imagination. Murray - Kallgren my god.

Matthews isn't resigning here for more years of this dumpster fire. Glad Dubas walked him right to free agency.

The only hope is that the intense health background check was to ensure he could be placed on LTIR and this was actually a trade for cap space + picks.

I hope he's the backup because he's pretty much a Mazrek clone. Terrible numbers and injured most of last season. He played 20 games last season.

Aweful pickup by Dubas. And I normally have faith in him but this.... let's just say if they don't go out and find a true starter the season will be disappointing.

Is he even medically cleared to play?
