RD Phil Myers (2 years @ 2.55; pending RFA)
LW Nick Cousins (50% retained) (1 year @ 750k; pending UFA)
LW/C Anthony Richard

:nashville
LD Travis Dermott (2 years @ 1.5 mill; pending RFA)
LW Nick Ritchie (2 years @ 2.5 mill; pending UFA)
C Semyon Der-Arguchintsev

I was throwing around this idea the past week or so because I believe it was a good fit for two playoff-caliber teams.

Phil Myers has been healthy scratched a lot in Nashville, but there is some upside in him that the Leafs may want to tap. Somewhat similar to Dermott in Toronto, but with Sandin now likely on the team full time, Dermott may not have many opportunities to realize that potential anymore. With a fresh start, I think he can be a really good #5 (and possibly even a top 4 guy if given a proper chance) behind Josi, Ekholm, Fabbro, and Carrier. He has been mostly rotating with Liljegren this year, and I think the Leafs would rather give Myers a chance to rehab himself at this point.

Nick Ritchie has not been a great fit for the Leafs' system, but I think he could end up being an upgrade on Cousins (or at least McCarron) in Nashville. Cousins has a Dubas connection, and is a better fit for how the Leafs play, so he would be a solid 4th liner/depth forward for the Leafs this year.

Leafs give Nashville a solid prospect for Cousins to be retained. Richard can take SDA's spot on the Marlies.

Three mid-20's guys with upside who look like they could use better opportunities than they are currently getting. Fits the Leafs apparent MO for TDL (they want guys with term, not rentals), and I think there is good value going to Nashville.

So lets break this down
SDA and Richard are pretty irrelevant, neither really has much value so we can remove them from the overall trade valuation.
Dermott = Myers in this scenario
Cousins > Ritchie

Leafs probably add a bit here, especially considering the retention.

Pass from Nashville.

I don't think any of us knows what is really going on with Myers, but if we take the organization at face value in terms of their attempts to work with him offline from games to get him up to NHL standards, then he is exactly what we need most on our team right now: a big capable bottom-pair RD.

And we have plenty of bigger bodies up front, what we don't have is anybody else who agitates like Cousins. I would like to keep Cousins around for the playoffs. He's a better player than Ritchie who is basically just a 2-yr contract dump at this point. Certainly there would be no reason whatsoever for the Preds to retain money on the better player.

This is a bad deal for the Preds. Even if the team ultimately decides not to re-sign Cousins in the summer, and even if they decide they can't fix Myers and buy out his contract, that outcome is still better than this trade.

Toronto could use someone that’s good at chirping the opposition which Cousins does well.
not sure what he's saying on the ice but everyone wants to fight Bunting, and he's taking a ton of after the whistle cheap shots, so, he's getting under the skin, but, maybe more low key

Why would you move out players who are familiar with the team and system to players who are not, in a pretty lateral trade when you're aiming for playoffs? Doesn't really make sense to me.

I'd do it, not sure if NSH would. Dermott for Myers as a base I wouldn't mind, not sure if NSH fans would like that.

What would be the price of Philippe Myers to the Canucks? Would Nashville trade him?
We have no idea. They haven't been playing him while they try to work out some developmental flaws they perceive in his game. Supposedly. But there's not really any feedback on the status of that project. Do they think he's making progress and will still factor into the mix? Are they disappointed and starting to lose hope? None of us knows. So we have no idea if he'd be on the trade block or not either.

That said, if he was on the block, then we need a RD, so it's probably not easy to find a trade that fits.

I'm okay with it I guess. A little disappointed that this is arguably the best we'd do for Dermott after years of flashing legit top-4 potential, but sometimes it just doesn't work out.

If they were willing to trade him, Canucks have some veteran rd that they could offer.

It's a pretty lateral move but makes sense as a base. I'd up the offer to:

Dermott, Ritchie, Hirvonen (2nd rd, Finland WJC captain)

Hirvonen developing behind Granlund would be interesting and he gives NSH a potential LW/C top 9 pivot.

Pass from Nashville.

Dermott can play the right-side and is a quality bottom pair D on a contender waiting for a top 4 shot. Myers is the more risky bet if anything, but higher upside.

It's a decent bet if NSH wants a young ish, ready made LD/RD with some untapped potential who can jump on your PK immediately. Basically a similar player to Myers, so Toronto would have to add a sweetener like mentioned above.
