Why would they pick him if they had the opportunity to pick fabbro just last the waivers
Possibly because Fabbro has literally double the cap hit.

It’s a lot easier on the cap to have your press box black ace making 1.25 mil a year than 2.5.

I guess I'm hoping he does get claimed... just so he's not "in the way" occupying the minimal amount of cap that he does when buried.

That being said, you've gotta feel for the guy a bit... he's played 5 AHL games in his career. If he does fall through waivers, he's going to be in really tough to get a callup with the Leafs having 8 defencemen on the NHL roster ahead of him, plus Marshall Rifai, Topi Niemla, and Cade Webber all who the Leafs would presumably like to try and develop / give an opportunity if they got down to #9 on the depth chart.

Also wouldn't suprise me that if he does clear, that he might get traded shortly thereafter, and possibly have minimal value. If you're a team only carrying 7D (due to roster limitations), and not overly happy with your AHL defence; having him as a guy you can call up at some point when you need him isn't the worst thing.

I know the Leafs wanted to "do right" by him to keep him in the NHL, but he's a 30 year old who had trouble getting playing time on the worst team in the league with term. The next place to go is the AHL.

I could see the Ducks claiming him, as Tristan Luneau has been sent to the minors and Radko Gudas is currently the only RHD on the roster.

Not ideal for him to be on the Marlies. They have enough bodies rotating in/out as is (and Mermis at some point will join them). Think your suggestion here is probably what ends up happening. If they got a pick back I'd be thrilled..but likely a 26+year old from another teams system.

Have not seen Benning play this year, but he has got to be better than the six turnstiles that the Habs dressed on Saturday. Habs should claim him.

Benning is less mobile than a typical traffic cone. He's an outright awful defenseman who cannot handle the slightest bit of speed - if someone gets just one step on him, it's an automatic 2-1 rush chance going the other way, because he cannot pivot fast enough to stop someone who hasn't even passed him going the other way.

He's not an NHL defenseman, because he's tremendously slow and immobile, and not big enough or skilled enough to make up for it.
