Another expansion bait contract? We will see a lot of these. (although if the 40/70 rule applies here, Sparks might not qualify anyway)

Sparks helped guarantee Auston Matthews, he deserves this contract.

So, wait, who's their backup expected to be, this season?

I figured that was Sparks' gig now that Bernier's gone.

Or are he and Bibeau going to duke it out in training camp for the role of Leafs' official benchwarmer?

Sparks is going to the AHL.

Lou already said he's going to get an experienced back-up.

A "thank-you contract" for getting us Matthews I would presume.

This probably doesn't mean "a back-up" as Lou alluded to.

If Toronto wants to win this season Sparks can't be the guy getting 18-20 starts.

He needs more seasoning. He's Reimer 2.0 too scramble and needs to be better positionally.

Style wise you might be correct, although it's an insult to compare the two as his play last season made Reimer look like Hasek. I'm assuming the plan is to start him in the AHL and perhaps pull him up in the event of injuries or a trade deadline deal.

Pretty good with limited playing time in the AHL, so the re-sign makes sense. Can't imagine he'll see much time in the NHL this season though.

From https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-expansion-draft-rules/c-281010592

iii) One goaltender who is under contract in 2017-18 or will be a restricted free agent at the expiration of his current contract immediately prior to 2017-18. If the club elects to make a restricted free agent goaltender available in order to meet this requirement, that goaltender must have received his qualifying offer prior to the submission of the club's protected list.

No 40/70 for goaltenders.

So, in case the young Leafs struggle half-way through the season, Shanny can make a call and have Sparks start for the rest of the year in order to out tank the rest of the league.

I think it's a good idea to give him more development time which is what this contract provides. He'll have all summer to reflect on his performance and to improve upon it. If he has any future NHL aspirations he'll be working his ass off to make it happen.
Another year with the Marlies and maybe a crack at a backup job in 17/18. He's a good kid, I hope he makes the most out of what is likely his last chance at the show.

Or maybe we can trade our starter for Chad Johnson?
