I was like how the HELL did Tyler Myers get another contract after the extension he signed in the offseason

Pretty close to league minimum, and low enough to burry in the AHL.

Perfect deal for a player that isn't guaranteed to be an NHL regular.

One benefit is it likely gives them flexibility with waivers. He might get claimed if he was on an expiring deal, but with him now having 3 years left, teams would probably look elsewhere

If it's a one-way deal then that's a further disincentive for another team to claim him off waivers. It could help the Leafs protect their fringe defence depth.
