For your reading enjoyment, courtesy of the home office in Zurich, here is IIHF expert Klaus Zaugg's updated list of the Top 10 Upsets in Swiss World & Olympic hockey history:

1. February 18, 2006 (Olympics in Turin), Switzerland vs. Canada, 2-0
The first win ever vs. Canada, previously Swiss had only tied Canada 1-1 April 30, 1992 at the World Championship in Bratislava for its first point ever. Martin Gerber stopping all 49 shots and Paul DiPietro providing both goals.

2. May 3, 2000 (World Championship in St. Petersburg), Switzerland vs. Russia, 3-2
The Swiss had to avoid the Relegation Round, and the only way was to beat heavily favored Russia. The famous and for its serious coverage worldwide recognized Swiss paper -- the Neue Zurcher Zeitung -- wrote in the game preview: "Before Switzerland can beat the Russians, the Czar will be back in power."

3. May 7, 1988 (World Championship in Basel), Switzerland vs. Russia, 4-2
First win ever vs. the Russians (or Soviets) in an Olympic or World Championship, and Switzerland qualified for the semi-finals. David Aebischer played stellar.

4. Feb. 16, 2006 (Olympics in Turin), Switzerland vs. Czech Republic, 3-2
The first Swiss win ever in an Olympic tournament vs. the Czechs. David Aebischer played stellar between the pipes.

5. Feb. 14, 1988 (Olympics in Calgary), Switzerland vs. Finland, 2-1
The first win vs. one of the top hockey nations in an Olympic tournament since 1948, and it happened in the opening game. Kobi Kolliker, now serving as an assistant to Swiss head coach Ralph Krueger, scored the game-winner.

6. March 23, 1950 (World Championship in London), Switzerland vs. Sweden, 3-2
With this victory, Switzerland won its last European Championship.

7. April 11, 1972 (World Championship in Prague), Switzerland vs. Finland, 3-2
It was a sensational upset, but it didn't help. Switzerland was relegated to the B Pool in this tournament.

8. April 29, 1991 (World Championship in Turku), Switzerland vs. Czechoslovakia, 4-3
The first Swiss win over an international powerhouse since 1972.

9. April 28, 1992 (World Championship in Bratislava), Switzerland vs. Russia, 2-2
The first point ever vs. the Russians (then the Soviets) in a World Championship or Olympic tournament.

10. May 6, 2005 (World Championship in Vienna), Switzerland vs. Russia, 3-3
The third time the Swiss have scored a point vs. the Russians (or Soviets) in a World Championship or Olympic tournament. Again, David Aebischer was stellar.

Great reading! Thanks!

Looks like the Swiss have taken it to the Russians a few times.

I just googled it up and the tournament was in 1998, not 1988, so that makes sense now!

I dont know if it was an upset, but their would have been atleast one down the road when swiss won a bronze in the World Jrs.

I think the 2000 upset is a little overrated. Latvia and Belarus managed to upset the Ruskies that time. They were just pathetic.

Perhaps, but the Swiss were the first ones that tournament to beat Russia in that string of upsets.

Oops, sorry for the typo guys. Thanks for the correction. :handclap:

Perhaps I was having a 1988 Calgary Olympics flashback that conjured up images of Swiss goalies Oliver Anken and Richard Bucher.

Or maybe I was remembering the 1992 WC with goalies Renato Tosio and Reto Pavoni. Who knows? Maybe I just have a bad case of carpal tunnel syndrome
