I will say, without me being vehemently of any opinion, that when it comes to Quinn as a “development” coach:
Kakko still looks bad. Better, some games, than most of last year, but still disappointing for a 2OA sophomore.
Lafreniere looks like Kakko did last year, albeit with better offensive instincts to get in the right places and be a bit more noticeable.
Chytil is in year three (plus 9 games 4 years ago) and while he had 2 really strong games before getting hurt, that sample size isn’t big enough to say he’s turned the corner officially. So far he’s been a lot like Kakko and Laf.
Hajek basically busted. Probably on him alone but he was once highly anticipated and a center piece of the TB trade.
Howden was supposed to be a middle six C but looks firmly like he’ll be nothing more than a bottom sixer, albeit a decent one.
Gauthier has potential, looked like he played well to start and has been benched in favor of 3 career AHLers.
Lias was a brat perhaps but that was totally poorly handled and it blew up in our faces.
Kravstov almost pulled a similar act after coming to camp here.
Fox showed up as a nearly finished product out of NCAA, stepped right in and didn’t really have much development under Quinn.
Ditto Miller right now.
Lindgren also did his developing in NCAA/Hartford and showed up pretty much as is with Quinn.
Shesterkin, the same but KHL. And now he’s getting yanked around, not starting consecutive games, not able to get a rhythm or confidence.
Buch and Tony were considered Quinn’s concrete examples of successful player development. Tony is about to get scratched off that list emphatically.
Is he a development coach? He’s certainly not a strategy, systems, Xs and Os coach. He’s not a motivator. He doesn’t have a firm handle on his locker room right now, it would seem.
I know this is more about Tony and not Quinn, but I do have a hard time looking at things and being happy with the boss right now.
