Checking in on big Time Wilson. Is he still a fan and organizational favorite in Washington? Does Washington need to maybe move him to free up salary?
Why exactly would Washington need to move Wilson to free up salary? These threads always go so well, I can’t wait to see what the responses are, it’s probably been about a week since we’ve had a Wilson thread.

I’ll kick us off in anticipation. He’s never scored 30 Goals. He’s never scored 60PTs. He’s constantly injured and has never played a full season. He’s probably just a few seasons away from a precipitous decline and retirement. I think that about covers it.

The Capitals aren’t going to trade Tom Wilson. I don’t anticipate ANYONE offering ANYTHING that will even slightly change that position.

You can probably close the thread.

Here's Tom at the end of the season talking to the media about re-signing:

I’m not a guy that’s going to play hardball and say that I don’t want to be here. Everyone knows I want to be here. No matter what happens, I want to help this city win games. Obviously, there’s a business part of it where things can happen, different outside things whether it’s me or the team, shit happens – you never know. But for me, I can’t imagine playing for another team. I don’t want that to happen.

Here's Caps GM Brian MacLellan at the end of the season talking to the media about re-signing Tom:

I’d like Tom to finish up in Washington. He’s been a big part of our culture, our group. He’s consistently gotten better throughout the years. We’re going to do everything we can to sign him.

Here's Elliotte Friedman responding to the rumors a couple weeks ago that the Kings were interested in Tom:

During the Final I really didn't get a chance to look into it too much. I heard the reports, I'll be honest I didn't hear any of the information myself, but I heard the reports, so finally I looked into it now that the SCF is over, and Jeff, I got rejected... I was rejected like Bam Adebayo was defending me. I was told it's not happening. I was told that the Capitals want to keep him, and they consider him a big part of their future. So someone said to me "make up other stuff like you always do, don't make up that one."

If you want to know what it'd take to get him, start with the most you'd be willing to offer, and then keep adding. He's not going anywhere.

To answer OP's specific questions though,

> Is he still a fan and organizational favorite in Washington?

The quotes above should tell you everything you need to know about how the organization sees him. The fans see him the same way. I think he's probably the second most common jersey at Caps games right now after Ovechkin. Moving him would be extremely unpopular.

> Does Washington need to maybe move him to free up salary?

The Caps have 16 other guys under contract right now for next season, and I think they'd move about 15 of them first if they needed to free up salary, which they don't have any desperate need to do anyway. He's absolutely not the kind of player you move for salary cap reasons.

Wilson for Debrincat in a one for one
This should be a no-brainer under 95% of circumstances.

As a Capitals fan and reading what the Caps organization themselves is putting out, I don’t think the Caps would legitimately consider this. The player, the fit, the $$, none of them work for the Caps. At least not in a trade for Tom Wilson.

Wilson is worth a great deal, and the Caps might under other circumstances be starting a rebuild at this point. Yet the team has committed to Ovechkin's goal record chase and icing a competitive team through at least the remainder of the Backstrom (2025) and Ovechkin (2026) contracts. That's their timeline, and they will be trying to win through 2026. Whether that is wise or not is immaterial.

They plan to sign Wilson to a long deal that runs through the end of his career (or certainly his prime years). He wants to sign with them. Unless the two sides are exceedingly far apart on numbers, that's the likely outcome this summer. They are not shopping him, and it doesn't sound like they are listening to offers unless it's a dramatic overpay. Both sides want to get a deal done.
