I’ll preface this by saying I don’t want Wilson moved and hope he retires a Capital. I watch hockey to be entertained and Wilson is one of the most entertaining players to watch, at least in my opinion.

That said, it’s summer and not much is going on, and he’s entering the final year of his deal and Brian MacLellan has said he wants to shake up the Caps top six. I’ve always coveted Nylander and would gladly give him the extension Toronto may not be able to or want to give him. A top six in a few years with Nylander, Leonard, Cristall, and Miroshnichenko has the look of a solid forward group post Ovechkin. Nylander also gives them a better shot to try and be competitive now while Ovi is still Ovi.

What’s it take to agree on a swap of Wilson for Nylander and send Tom back home to Toronto? Who adds what?

Edit: for this thread I’m assuming if the Leafs trade for Wilson he comes with a contract extension and is not a flight risk after this season.

Base of the trade is something I’ve been interested in but I think Wilson on an expiring deal is too risky to trade for in the offseason. If he’s healthy and looking like his usual self at the deadline that would be a much safer option but would be complicated to pull off for it’s own reasons (LTIR + cap accumulation).

Fair to be concerned about him coming back from injury but he looked every bit like Tom Wilson for the third of the season he did play. He scored at a 32 goal pace the last 33 games of the season and it wasn’t due to an unsustainable shooting percentage. He looked fast and strong and honestly better than I expected.

My assumption is that Wilson agrees to an extension with Toronto, I wasn’t thinking he’d be a one year rental.

Don't think Wilson looked fully himself after that big knee surgery, and he plays a hard/heavy game in general, could definitely be a guy whose body breaks down early.

I love the fit of a healthy Wilson on the Leafs, but would be very worried about him dropping off, especially since we'd have to give him a big UFA extension for this to make sense. Would much rather extend Nylander, who has been playing the best hockey of his career, and IMO likely has lots of prime years left (2 years younger than Wilson, much healthier so far).

I'm totally fine with giving Nylander $9 mil/year, which I think is around where he'll come in. I'm sure the contract will take awhile to settle on, but I do strongly expect us to re-sign him. Assuming both Willie and Matthews re-sign, we'll have one year of cap squeeze - next year, where both Matthews/Willie's raises kick in, and JT is still on the books. But after that, JT's albatross contract expires, and we're fine for the cap. One year of cap squeeze is no biggie.

I’m going to throw a interesting one out here.

Nylander ( Extended ) for John Carlson

Personally I have no interest of giving Wilson his next contract. Probably 7x8 mil

Will age like Milian Lucic

Lol remember when he signed that contact and everyone laughed at Washington for thinking that was a good idea?

I remember
This is actually the opposite of what happened. Everyone said the Caps overpaid for a fourth line plug who is only good at punching faces and Wilson turned into a top six power forward who can play in all situations and helped them win a Cup. Weird comment.

The next contract he signs may be a bad one but Wilson was worth every penny of the one he’s about to finish.

Washington adds to that

Skating is what older players lose the quickest……anyone who’s played in the NHL is a “phenomenal” athlete including Lucic
Imo guys lose hands and legs. Depending on the player. Wilson would be legs. If he slows down then he becomes quite ineffective. As for this trade proposal I’d 100% do this if I was the Leafs. Their window could close July 1, 2024 if Matthews leaves as a UFA. They need to go all in right now. Wilson would be a key playoff piece. I’m not too sure Reaves can keep up, so he might not even dress is the playoffs.

Back to the topic….

No disrespect to Wilson but he’s getting up there in age and while different in game style, Nylander I assume has more value.

Considering age and we have already seen Wilson at his probable best, Washington would have to add. But it wouldn’t be a ridiculous add.

Wilson's expiring deal would probably be somewhat advantageous in terms of freeing up salary cap next off-season. But coupled with the injury concerns, there'd probably have to be at a future type of piece involved, which could make it unbalanced in the other direction.

Nylander is a difficult player to trade in the sense that I think we'd be looking for a constellation of smaller pieces if we move him, which would itself not be without risk. Glad I'm not in charge of making the decision.

I absolutely love Wilson. His injuries scare the hell out of me but I don't know how any team in the league wouldn't love to have him.

I have no idea what a trade would have to look like though.

What was my original statement? Just repost it verbatim and tell us what it said. F it, I’ll just do it myself. Here is what I said;

I didn’t “add” any second part, I just updated to my original quote which is reproduced above. I said it, I stand by it. Whether you think anyone in their mid-60s still has a clear recollection of the events is immaterial. The point still stands and is unassailable. Most people in any situation are not old enough to remember the Toronto Maple Leafs winning anything and those who do qualify as geriatric, at best.
This may be some of the dumbest shit I’ve ever had to read in my life. To think someone in their mid 60’s can’t remember something is ridiculous.

Keep digging your whole. To think being a Capitals fan wasn’t your dumbest decision in life.

This is from a poster session and is based upon respondents self-reported recall. It involves absolutely no objective testing of those memories and is not academic. It is psychological and descriptive, not analytic. It, in no way, demonstrates accuracy in any recall memories in older adults.
The funny thing is if you act like you post in real life, no one will remember you. Not from age related issues either, they’ll be in a hurry to actively forget.

This trade would hypothetically be done if we were privy to Wilson health. And a healthy Wilson is so unique I wouldn't even trade him for marner, at his contract, let alone a practically signed nylander.

Yes you read that right.

No deal. Wilson should retire a cap.
