Tkachuk hit on Guentzel (no supplemental discipline)

I'm impressed. A one game suspension ignoring the differences between the hits would probably have been the easier way out.
I really think the only reason they suspended Hagel (which I thought was worth 2) was because the zebras ignored the rule that said if a 5 minute interference call caused an injury it is an ejection by rule.

This is a pretty standard 2 minute interference call though. The type that starts a scrum afterwards because it’s cheap, but nothing more.

If he had time to turn his body to make the hit, he had time to not make the hit. Never thought it would be a suspension, but it was pretty late and deserved the penalty. At that point of the game I was fine with a major too, keep him off the ice to avoid any further foolishness.
Also Guetzel’s head is up, he’s clearly watching Cirelli with the puck already in the Florida zone at contact.

For those old school fans with the don’t admire your pass mentality, how about the refs don’t jump in front of Tkachuk after he does something and let him own it.

Since we buried Tampa twice with Hagel I don't see what the problem is
It’s the bulletin board material that gets a team on track. Only game Tampa was clearly outplayed was Game 1. Game 2 was a toss-up.

The two hits were more similar than NHL is claiming they were. Main difference is the player that got hit touching the puck beforehand as to whether suspension worthy or not.

This hit really didn't deserve a suspension, this was the correct call. The context surrounding it is the only reason it could have been a suspension, but the hit itself was punished appropriately during the game. Good on the NHL for getting it right.

Definitely a little late. But I don't see an attempt to injure where a suspension is needed.

This isn't the game I grew up with anymore (mostly 90's and pre 04-05 lockout) lol. A 5 minute penalty for that even seems insane. 2 minutes for sure but the fact that we're talking suspension here is beyond me.

Literally textbook clean hit.

Well, the contact was perfectly clean, I'll not deny that. If Guentzel still had the puck or had just released a pass a split second earlier, it would have been a good, hard hit, and clean as a whistle. Tremendous hit, even. It's just the timing of the hit was late, therefore it was rightfully called as an interference penalty.

Panthers continually getting the benefits of officiating and discipline.

Hagel’s hit shouldn’t have been a suspension.

I agree that what Hagel did wasn’t worthy of a suspension. I just don’t like that they set that precedent and then didn’t do anything about the Tkachuk hit. In a vacuum I doubt I would have cared about not suspending him though.

Also to be completely fair, if I were to say that I’m not biased about this, I would be a liar.
