Tkachuk hit on Guentzel (no supplemental discipline)

Watch it again, the pass is gone tkachuk turns back and hits him.
Again the difference in the two situations is Barkov was away from the puck. He had not possessed the puck or made a play with it. JG had possession, made a play, and then came the contact. Other than the contact, the situations are different.

I mean, just looking at the two, Hagel's shoulder is directly at Barkov's head when he makes his hit, and he puts a slight upwards trajectory into the contact. If he didn't actually hit the head it's very surprising.

Tkachuk isn't really close to Hagel, and realistically looks like he's intentionally staying low on the hit.

Neither of these violates Rule 48 if the puck was present, but given they both violate the interference rule I'm definitely factoring in that one of them was clearly more malicious than the other.

The NHL DOPS should release this statement tomorrow:

“the onus is on Tkachuk to ensure the player he is hitting is eligible to be checked. Guentzel is not eligible to be hit, and Tkachuk still intentionally delivers an extremely forceful body check to an unsuspecting opponent with sufficient force for supplemental discipline.’’

That was the reasoning in Hagel’s suspension, and it fits 100% with this hit as well.

It references eligibility (interference) and the force of the hit. So all that matters is that Tkachuk hit a player too hard without the puck. Which is exactly what Hagel did and served a suspension for

Genuine question, what’s different from this and a two minute interference?

According to the rule book, a referee may assess a major penalty for interference “based on the degree of violence.” (That may not be a verbatim quote but the word “violence” is definitely used.)

I find it a little strange personally, since when I was a referee under USA Hockey rules, there was no provision in the rules to call a major penalty for interference. On the other hand if someone did something really bad on a very late hit like that, it wouldn’t be much of a stretch to ping them for something else that has a provision available for assessing a major (and possibly a game misconduct on top of it). Even a match penalty for an “attempt to injure” is a nice catch-all if it’s bad enough to warrant it.

The fact that people think this is suspension worthy are saying this is worth 2+ games in the regular season? Come on, now. really? This is not a suspendable hit. We gonna suspend guys now for interference?

I said “steamboat” twice in that time. But I am incredibly smart. Your mileage may vary.

From the full speed video I posted:

Has the puck on his stick during the 7 second mark (Tkachuk had already initiated the bodycheck BTW if you notice).

Contact during the 8s mark. Less than a second passed. Not sure if your superior intellect knows this but a "steamboat" is often used to count seconds (some use Mississippi). If you fit 2 seconds in there, damn, you really are playing 4D chess to my checkers.

Let me as a Red Wings fan say this.

You're right that this really shouldn't be a suspension. It's silly to think that it should be.

But the league just set exactly that precedent. You can't both want Hagel suspended and think Tkachuk shouldn't be. Neither should be suspended. The league HAS to suspend Tkachuk now. Any other results is just blatant inarguable favoritism.

Exactly, the NHL f***ed up the Hagel hit and now they’re f***ed and Panthers fans are confused.

NHL should never have suspended Hagel for a good hit

That's easily not worthy of a suspension. Next time stop admiring your passes.

Guentz went to cry on the bench for a moment and then resumed to the game. A nothing burger.

It’s true. I have an amazing intellect, and a dominant command of the English language. Check my post history.

✅It was really late.
✅Tkachuk delivered hard hit even though he had chance to let up.
✅Guentzel hit his head on the ice and left game later.
✅It was hit on skilled player in already decided game.
✅It was major penalty in last 5 minutes of the game.
✅Tkachuk has history of dirty hits.
✅Precedent was set in this series. Touching the puck is irrelevant as both players were illegitimate targets for the hit.

So obviously league would do nothing because it’s laughing stock of all sports.

Anyone else see the Kariya- Stevens hit but... you know without hitting him directly in the head? lol

That reminds me… one of the commentators during that moment said “guys, that’s interference.” Under the rules at the time I’d be inclined to agree, but only a minor to Stevens, but again according to the standards of 2003 hockey.

Of course, under today’s rules, it probably gets a match penalty for an illegal check to the head plus a lengthy suspension.

You're absolutely right in a vacuum but the context is the key.

Florida-Tampa and Tkachuk specifically have history and the series has been incredibly chippy from the start.

They suspended Hagel to make the statement that taking runs @ players and potentially injuring them isn't going to fly, even if it's not a super eggregious hit like jumping into a player's head or violently boarding them from behind.

It's gonna be the same context and logic applied here. Tkachuk took a run @ him when he knew the game was iced. It's not super violent or dirty, it's clearly late and interference. Also Tkachuk sitting for a game will deter retribution and taking runs @ Panther players if he's punished for it.

That's the way I see it and anticipate him getting a game.
100% agree - with both teams getting warned that any more BS will be dealt with harshly.

I get it but I don’t think it should have got to this point in the first place. Playoffs are supposed to be chippy. Heads shots I can understand but this is just rocking the body late. Handle it in game with the appropriate penalties.

You gotta take history into account with these hits and Tkachuk has a history. If it was not Tkachuk it would probably not be a suspension, but with his history and the precedent in this series.. I think he gets 2 games. It will be a message to clean up the series

Just admit that you're a fan of Tkachuk. There's nothing to be ashamed.
