The result of Hagel's hit was worse, but this hit is just as predatory. It's not like he was carrying momentum into the hit; Tkachuk watches the pass go, then turns to hit Guentzel. Blatant intent to injure. It's so late that the fact that Guentzel even touched the puck is immaterial.

The only difference to the Hagel on Barkov hit is that Guentzel did actually have possession of the puck prior to the hit. They still made a precedent by suspending Hagel on a play that was originally and arguably correctly dealt with a major penalty.

On the Guentzel play the puck was long gone and Tkachuk had tons of time to let up. But with the precedent from one game ago in mind he went for the hit anyway. That should be considered too. Also, Guentzel hit his face on the ice pretty good, this could’ve ended much worse.

But since Tkachuk is the league’s golden boy they likely won’t suspend him and in a vacuum I’d be fine with it. The Hagel suspension makes this one a spicy decision though.

Honestly, an iconic hit. I feel like Tkachuk has been working his whole career to throw a check like that. Gordie Howe only had 5 "Gordie Howe Hattricks" in his career. This one is a "Matthew Tkachuk Hattrick" in one hit alone.

The game state and context of the series combined with the history of the player (known celebrated rat) contradict the last part of your assertion. The only reason to level that hit, that late, in a 4-1 game is to injure. If Tkachuk could actually skate better than Brett Hull, he'd have delivered it on time and this is nothing.

I understand that you see it that way, im leaning more on the it was only meant to rattle. This is coming from a neutral fan.

I'd agree with you but...In light of the suspension though?

Both are 5 min interference majors
Both fit the precedent set by the league on the 1 game suspension.
Tkachuk has a past littered with suspensions/fines/warnings while Hagel had 0 history


The "he had the puck" doesnt help Tkachuk here IMO
It could be argued that Hagel thought Barkov touched the puck or it could be a pure cheapshot right? At the very least it was reckless. Tkachuk knew the puck was long gone and absolutely smoked his guy eons late on a play that iced the game.....and he's a guy with a history of cheapshots when hes angry/frustrated.

You simply have to give him at least a game here.

It's hard not to notice. Very weird. Other guys: Chalie Huddy, Peter Zezel, Jeff O'neill (this last one is perplexing because ballooned up justa few years outside of being a pro hockey player). Fortunately he slimmed down this year, likely out of embarrassment losing that footrace to a really heavy intern guy. Good for him.
