Blue Jay Way..
I wanted to ask peoples opinion on tinted visors. Do you like wearing them and are they hard to get used to. I have never worn one before, so was wondering if it would be hard to go from never wearing one right to a tinted one. Lately people on my team have gotten pucks/sticks in their face so I have thought of sporting one.

I was also thinking about getting a tinted one. I have had three concussions in my life (two serious knockouts) and find light extra bright and really strains my eyes. I wear sunglasses a lot driving because of the sun. I wondered if anyone with the same problem had tried a tinted visor for hockey because of the bright rink lights?

I would suggest trying your standard (non-tinted) one first, and see if the lights even bother you. If you've been playing without a visor already, it would probably be safe to assume the lights don't bother you now, so they wouldn't with a visor. I have a visor and don't even notice it - no glare, scratches, fog, etc.

Also - as noted.... you will likely get chirped. Most people who wear a tinted one likely do so because Ovechkin did/does, and do it because it's the "cool" thing to do in their minds.

I played with one for a long time (accidentally ordered the tinted oakley from IW, too lazy to send it back) and it took about an hour to get used to. I used cages up to that point or nothing at all so there was a slight adjustment but since finally buying a clear one, I can't tell too much of a difference.

I prefer clear over tinted but then again, I have no real issues with light sensitivity and I don't wear glasses or contacts. I don't know what brand you're looking at, but I had an Oakley tinted shield and I have a clear Bauer. Both are straight cut shields, but the Oakley is about a half inch wider (vertically) so it covers more of your face. For me that meant covering about a half inch under my nose, where as the Bauer just barely covers my schnozz (and its a formidable one).

Case in point, Oakley straight cuts are wider just so you're aware.

If the light bothers your eyes then go for it, but as others said just be ready to be chirped. Regardless of your reason for wearing it people are going to rip on you for it. As long as you know that going in and don't care what others think then you will be fine.

I know the moral police are in here telling you that you should not care what others think and what not, but the reality is wearing a tinted visor or yellow laces are probably the two things that will get you chirped no matter what. I would say the chances are close to 100% that something will be said. The 2 guys in my league that wear them get called smoke visor and Robocop all the time. I don't bother with chirping them about it, but many people do.

This. I had 2 concussions in a 3 year span and was getting headaches at times during games so I gave the tinted visor a shot (you get your fair share of chirping but a-lot of the guys who are chirping were the benders who couldn't beat me one on one), it worked as far as toning down the brightness but I eventually took it off after I got a pretty good stick mark from a high stick and went back to clear.

So long as you play clean and don't suck for your level nobody should be chirping.

This is what should happen, but you know it is not what happens. Guys love to chirp and if you give them a reason to they will, but as you said if it helps, especially with reducing post concussion symptoms then I would agree that he should go for it.

I've never understood the fashion police and what the big deal is yellow laces or a tinted visor. I shouldn't say I don't understand it, I guess I don't agree with it. From my experience, guys that chirp usually have an inferiority complex and will attempt to draw attention to someone who stands out for having a tinted visor or yellow laces so no one notices how bad they are.

Most guys buy equipment because it fits good, but given the choice between two equally fitting pieces of equipment why not go with the one you like more. If that's a tinted visor, so be it. I've noticed a lot of guys won't buy the X100 bauer visor with the chrome but most of the world juniors that wear a visor do wear it. If the logic is those guys are extremely talented then no one should be using a totalone stick or skates or any high priced equipment.

Sorry for the rant, just a huge pet peeve of mine. To the OP, if it helps with the post-concussion symptoms, by all means you should wear it. I've worn one before and occasionally switch from tinted to clear and I don't notice a big difference

I think the reason people get chirped for tinted visors or yellow skates is b/c for most of them they are trying to stand out. If you are trying to stand out you are opening yourself up to get chirped. I think the difference is in my league most of the guys know each other so it is all in good fun. When people take it seriously that's when it gets stupid. My team's jerseys are based of the Wild's and there is a guy on my team who went out and bought a green helmet and green pants. A lot of us rip on him for it, but he doesn't care. I think it is the intention that matters the most.

It's not only about gear, also about how they play, virtually every guy I've seen play with yellow laces, tinted/mirrored visor (there's actually a real bender in my league who's gear is exactly like ovi's, before he switched to bauer  ) are poor players who sit/hover @ the oppositions blueline looking for the breakaway pass. If someone's trying to stand out from the team & look like an egocentric star, it says a lot about their personality.

I think if the visor is the 1 single d*uche-y thing he does, the chirping will be extremely minimal. Furthermore, people talk, word will get out why he wears it and people will leave it alone.

If not, **** 'em.

I think the safer move is to go with a black cage. Don't even take the risk, because even with a visor there's still a chance you can get hit (stamkos in playoffs last year). Plus, like everyone is saying, you're gonna get chirped bc they will have no clue of your situation.

the reason the x100 is so popular is because bauer has a contract with north american jrs for that shield, it conforms to canadian safety standards removed from the face quickly

Wear it. Who cares about the chirps. Try one on at Sportchek or whatever LHS you've got near you and see if it helps with the glare, and go from there.

I'll give you that one. I would probably call the puck hog/ringer/duster something not so nice as well lol. I was referring more to the guy whose got decent skill, not the worst guy on the team, but one of the better players but in no way goes around parading he's all that because he wears yellow laces or a tinted visor.

I may be a little different from most people in the sense that if the guy isn't a d**che, stuff like what he wears isn't going to affect my opinion of him. I know when i bought the tinted visor I simply bought it because I thought it looked cool. I was never the most talented guy on my team, but among the better players. I never went around hotdoggin' it but if what I wore pissed people then so be it. I guess you have to have thick skin to stand out, or have some skill to back it up. Luckily I had a decent amount of both lol
