Guy has looked real good with Giordano, if Gio is willing to sign a very team friendly deal, I would definitely be good with that. We were fairly patient with Liljegren and it seems to have worked out for now at least.

Playoff D looks decent now, what would you guys do? I have it

Rielly - Brodie
Giordano - Liljegren
Muzzin - Luba

Extras: Sandin - Holl

We may only have four Top 4 on paper in Rielly, Brodie, Gio and Muzzin but it really looks like we have 3 2nd pairing out there and maybe Rielly-Brodie could be considered a 1st pair.

revisionist history on why the leafs didn't have lily up earlier ...
the first time sandin came up lily was out injured (high ankle sprain?) and dubas said they wanted to give him a look that he had EARNED then if he hadn't been injured ...
last year the issue was 100% cap related ... lily had bonuses and sandin did not.. bonuses count towards your cap number and we were tight against the cap ... lily was over a mill, sandin was 8 and change ... THAT is the reason lily didn't get prior looks, it was nothing as childish as "i didn't draft him boo hoo" ....
leafs have always been real high on him

Leafs defence last year was also ridiculously heathy unlike this year. 5 defensemen played at least 51 out of 56 games last season. Bogosian, our least healthy defenseman still played 45/56. There was just rarely any opportunity to get Liljegren up to play with the big club even though he deserved a shot.

I guess it's worth mentioning that Babcock would have had Liljegren come up multiple times when he was coach... the only thing stopping this from happening were injuries and high ankle sprains. I'm actually kind of glad that this was the case, for all we know, he would have been sat in favour of no-name veterans or treated with the same scorn that Holl was. Might have even put him in the same 7D purgatory that Marincin was in.

Thankfully, as our injured players return, we will now have 4 NHL calibre pairings... without including Dahlstrom. This is a boon if the team looks to make a extended push.
LD: Muzzin (IR), Rielly, Giordano, Sandin (IR)
RD: Brodie, Liljegren, Holl, Lybushkin

As someone who prayed for Lilly to tank to us and has been on his bandwagon when it wasn't really a cool thing to do, I'm glad the young buck is coming into his own now in the show. We had a steal day 1 and we still have a steal now. This kid is only starting to show his full potential. His defense is going to be very very good and his offense is eventually going to start rolling around the more confident he gets. We have an elite two-way puck-moving dman here. Those who have watched him with the Marlies know just how much of a beast this kid is. With him, Mo and Sandin, we have 3 players that we can put on 3 pairings who can move the puck and play a full 200 ft game. We need to surround them with defensively sound partners, however. But for the first time in ages, our stars might line up and we have just what the doctor ordered in Muzz, Boosh and Gio.

Rielly - Brodie
Muzz - Boosh
Gio - Lilly

I think that might be the best/most well-rounded d-core we've had over the last 35 years.

You know there's two Aho's in the league. In fact they both scored within minutes of each other and apparently hold each other in high regard and have a mutual respect for each other. They called each other after the game and the conversation went something like....."I'm not the Aho, you the Aho!" "No, I'm not the Aho, you the Aho!"
If there is a third Aho, maybe they can make a meme like the Spider-Man Meme

I was upset years ago that Valimaki went the pick before us and remember being even more upset when he made his NHL debut early and everyone was posting about how he was gonna be a top pairing defender.

Funny how things change... although Valimaki can still end up being the better of the two.

Maybe it’s time to up his minutes

He’s obviously dominant in a limited role, more so then dermott was

He’s played well in the games he does play 18+ but I feel like these last games we should really use to see what he has, rest up some guys and let Liljegren loose a bit

The concern he's been coming along slowly given he's 22 and only has played 63 career games so far seems to be short-sighted. Liljegren has been brought along carefully and now that he's surrounded with an impressive group of veterans (Gio, Muzzin, Brodie, Reilly) it's starting to show in his game.

It's a timely positive development, as what you get from Gio Muzzin and Brodie in the next few years isn't likely to be as good as what you got in the last few.

Getting into really interesting contract territory. Love it when young guys make the cap situation difficult, these are the exact problems that you want to have!

I think Liljegren is primed for a bridge here. A two year extension this summer means he gets a new deal when Muzzin and Brodie come off the books in the summer of '24. Very tempting to try and get him locked in to some term on a cheap deal, but considering how much a cost effective player like Hagel is worth to contending teams, I think Dubas might be happy with a 2x1.5m deal. That leaves plenty of space to make other additions over the next two years and allows us to make big choices in the summer of 24' (when Matthews and Nylander's deals are up as well).

Perfect line of succession set up here. Would allow Liljegren and likely Sandin to take Muzzin and Brodie’s cap space, along with their minutes.

Best group of 8 defensemen in Leaf history...I think so
Reilly
Brodie
Giodarno
Lyubushkin
Holl
Liljegren
Muzzin
Sandin
