Weird that he never gets any credit for it.
He does? Its why a lot of people thought the Leafs didnt like Liljegren.

Hunter had no problem picking in the 1st round, but you can argue that a random HF poster would have taken Marner, Matthews, Liljegren. It was anything outside the 1st that was a huge issue besides Derms, and even then we could have taken Aho with the next pick (rumoured to be Dubas' choice).

Some people wanted to draft Hanafin but IIRC Liljegren was indeed pretty much a unanimous choice here. I don't usually follow this place on draft day but I did that time and almost everyone here was salivating over Liljegren as he kept dropping and when it was the last pick before us, people were begging on the other team to pass on him. Then when it was our turn people were begging for us to draft him and when we did, the jubilation was through the roof.

I remember a while back many people weren't that high on him any more, the narrative became "there were reasons other teams passed on him" and so on but I think most of understood that young players take time to develop, he missed crucial development time at a young age, Dmen take longer to develop anyway so let's not be impatient etc. and now we're being vindicated.

I'll say it again, Liljegren and Sandin are the future, maybe Niemela as well. Nobody is untouchable, not even M&M but yeah, I'd need something really good coming back before I'd even consider trading any of those guys.

Defense wins championships, simple as that. Our D is looking better now then it has in ages and I'd like to keep it that way for the next decade at least. Now if we could only find a reliable goalie ...

He was projected to be 1st overall the year before the draft and then started falling pretty heavily from there, not sure why. Not suggesting he should've went #1 lol but he was an absolute steal at 17. Top 10 for sure.

1) Makar
2) Robertson
3) Petterson
4) Heiskanen
5) Suzuki
6) Thomas
7) Hischier
8) Liljegren
He was projected 2nd overall behind Patrick one year before the draft. And yeah, it was mono in his draft year, which he got shortly after he started out hot and killed it at the Hlinka.

Yeah only Marner wasn't virtually unanimous here. It was pretty much Strome/Marner/Hanifin and some really liked Rantanen/Werenski/Provorov, but iirc most people had Marner as their guy.

Exactly though. When people said to trade them for JT Miller I couldn't understand. 2 years of a good player doesn't equal ~5 years of control + whatever else you buy of two budding top-4 (possibly top-2) defenseman.

revisionist history on why the leafs didn't have lily up earlier ...
the first time sandin came up lily was out injured (high ankle sprain?) and dubas said they wanted to give him a look that he had EARNED then if he hadn't been injured ...
last year the issue was 100% cap related ... lily had bonuses and sandin did not.. bonuses count towards your cap number and we were tight against the cap ... lily was over a mill, sandin was 8 and change ... THAT is the reason lily didn't get prior looks, it was nothing as childish as "i didn't draft him boo hoo" ....
leafs have always been real high on him

Actually to this day, Liljegren remains, from what I recall, the most agreed upon pick on this board since before Schenn. Most picks generate a huge pissing match, but this one had like 99% posters on board which was wild.

Liljegren was not a Dubas pick.

I suspect this is a big part of the reason why Sandin has been getting more opportunities than him until recently.
Uh...even if he wasn't....that is not even close to the reason. He was finding his feet a lot during his time in the Marlies. Keefe used him a lot too so...I don't know where you are getting this assumption from.

Why you have to ruin my day telling me Dubas wanted Aho. I had no idea. Time to go sulk over no Aho.

You know there's two Aho's in the league. In fact they both scored within minutes of each other and apparently hold each other in high regard and have a mutual respect for each other. They called each other after the game and the conversation went something like....."I'm not the Aho, you the Aho!" "No, I'm not the Aho, you the Aho!"
