Very happy about his elevated play lately. He’s blossoming before our eyes into the right shot d we’ve been waiting for.

Still remember draft 2016, dreams of Matthews and hopefully getting Lily the year after :)

That 2017 draft, hoping he’d fall to us, having it happen, and drafting him was something else. Perfect cap off to that surprising 2016-17 season.

What gem. I was always adamant on the mainboards about him. His skating and shooting ability was always going to put him ahead of Sandin.

I say this only as a theoretical idea and not so much a concrete one because regardless of the choices made, we need ELC dmen regardless. But I value Niemela higher than I ever valued Sandin. With Liljegren breaking out like this, you could feasibly demand a ransom for Sandin under the assumption that Niemela ends up as good as his numbers suggest.

Not a bad idea. We clearly have an abundance of good dman which is like a first in I don't know how long lol.

Or just keep all of the good defensemen? Muzzin and Brodie only have 2 years left. We're going to need them.

Im 100% sure he is surprising his team-mates and management right now. Its like a switch went off. He simplified his game. He is laying some big hits, competing really hard in his own zone which is what we need in the playoffs. I think Liljegren might have bumped himself ahead of Sandin on the depth chart literally in 2 weeks.

Lily's rockin' it right now. Ride that pony cowboy. Yeehaaaaaaa
If you wanna ride
Don't ride the white horse
If you wanna ride
Don't ride the white horse
White horse
Don't ride the white horse
White horse
Don't ride the white horse
No, no, no
If you wanna be rich
You got to be a bitch
You got to be a bitch
I said, "Rich"
Rich
You bitch
If you wanna ride
Ride the white pony
Ride, ride the white pony
White pony
White pony

trading a good young defenseman is always a mistake(well ALWAYS might be a tiny bit hyperbolic but u get it im sure) imo given how much more they cost to get, how much u need them to win and how difficult they are to find in the draft compared to forwards. muzzin aint getting younger or healthier, holl just isnt good or stable enough and brodie wont be here after 2 more years, keep em all i say. the team trading the young stud dman usually loses the deal in the long run.

Yeah, that's why I said it's purely a hypothetical.

We haven't been able to develop defensemen in decades. We're currently looking at 3 (at least) up and coming top 4 defensemen in our system. We absolutely need to hold onto them. We're looking at a bright future with them.

Keep all the good young ones anyway. Sandin and Liljegren are the future and the only way I'd consider trading Sandin at this point if there was a reliable #1 goalie coming back the other way. And I don't mean a rental like MAF, I mean someone who we'd expect to be our #1 for years to come.

Great again. Keefe should get criticism for the pairings but at least he adjusted midway through. The fact Lilly made Dahlstrom look good is impressive.
First career PP goal too on a nice one timer
I said it somewhere on this board the other day, but I genuinely think Timmy will be our best Defenseman in a couple years. We are just scratching the surface with this kid's potential IMO.

His composure and ability to breakout a puck is high end IMO.

The pairings yesterday were a f***ing disaster, but you're absolutely bang on about Dahlstrom. That was easily the best I had seen him play, You have to think there was a Timmy effect there.

This is not a shock to anyone who watched the Marlies the last couple seasons. Timmy was easily the best defenseman on the team, even when Sandin was down there with him. Really happy to see he is finally getting the love he deserves.

He's only 22 as well lol.

Watching him fall in that draft, I was wondering if their was some spell the other GM's were under to let it happen. A great draft moment.
He was projected to be 1st overall the year before the draft and then started falling pretty heavily from there, not sure why. Not suggesting he should've went #1 lol but he was an absolute steal at 17. Top 10 for sure.

1) Makar
2) Robertson
3) Petterson
4) Heiskanen
5) Suzuki
6) Thomas
7) Hischier
8) Liljegren

Didn't he have mono and missed most of his draft season?
Perhaps I'm thinking of someone else.
Regardless, great pick by Dubas there.

Can't remember if it was Mono or an injury, but I remember something pretty significant happening and he just started dropping down the rankings. I'm glad we got him where we did, absolute core piece.

EDIT: You are correct, he had Mono and was out for 8 weeks, that really hurt his draft value

Dubas keeps trying to force Sandin ahead of him in the lineup, from the earlier call ups to the gifted PP time, but it’s becoming clear that Liljegren is simply the better Leaf.
I agree with you that Liljegren is better but it might have a lot to do with development path. Wish they would use his example as a map for future prospects. I believe Sandin would have benefitted from more time in the AHL to work on his defensive game.
