THW COLUMN: Senators Draft reviewed and graded

You are high on Ottawa's first round choice, you get a thumbs up from this guy!

Solid read though, well done.

Nothing to add other than the fact that it's reassuring the Oil King fans keep on saying how underrated Lazar's offensive upside is.

Hard to really make a big splash when we only had one pick in the first 2 rounds.

Solid articles otherwise.

So what's the point in those grades? Basically it comes down to this: if you have high first-rounder or several of them you get an A. If you have late first-rounder you get a B. If you don't have any first-rounders you get a C. Brilliant!

I enjoyed reading other peoples perspectives on the picks we made.

All of the pics have funny little captions like this:

Curtis Lazar joins the Senators, where he will have to learn to speak Swedish

Ha. Decent read too.

Then ignore the letter grading and focus on the article itself (what people SHOULD be focusing on).

Well written and I can't say I disagree with the general analysis of our draft. Like others, I'm very pleased to keep hearing those who've watched the Oil Kings often see Lazar as a player with valuable offensive upside.

I have a feeling Lazar is going to be something special in Ottawa. If he can formulate a top 6 game in the NHL, he absolutely has the attitude, drive and leadership to be a Sens captain some day.

Ha, I never claimed brilliance.

No it's mostly about value for picks. LA Kings had no pick until 57th overall but traded up to get a clear first-round value in Zykov, wound up with B+.

In same division Sharks had 20th pick and three seconds, traded one of them for a checker (Kennedy) and one to move up two spots and take a guy they could have had if they'd stayed pat. They wound up with the only F I gave in the NHL.

The column was more about the picks and the teams than the "grades", but grades get people to read for some reason. Regardless, thanks a ton for taking the time to check out my column and respond.

I work all my wit into my photo captions, thanks for appreciating them. (Notice I say "wit" not "wits", it's because alas I only have one).

Thanks for reading. You can aalways find me on thehockeywriters.com or follow me on Twitter: @StIves72

Off-topic question, but is the new division actually just called Division C? I thought that was just interim until they named it.
This sounds like an intramural volleyball league

Like to hear about what a great skater Lazar is. The Sens just didn't have enough overall team speed last season.

We've addressed a lot of that. As far as speed goes:

Corvo >> Gonchar
Macarthur >>> Dumb nutz
Ryan >>>>> Silfverberg
