Movies: Thunderbolts - May 2, 2025

Looks like a lot of fun with a little bit of heart sprinkled in. I think out of the 3 Marvel movies coming out this year (Cap 4, Thunderbolts, F4), this is the one I'm most excited about.

Word of mouth is going to have to help this one. Outside of US Agent for those who remember him from the West Coast Avengers when comics were their most commercially (not creatively) successful in the post Lee/Leifeld/McFarland Image Exodus, these aren't A-Tier characters.

Marvel got lucky with Guardians, can they do it again or is this another assembly line by the numbers movie?
 
James Gunn sold the Guardians movies. I doubt that someone else can properly recreate the same formula.

Bucky was sort of a fan favorite in Phase 2-3, and Elena and the Red Guardian were pretty well received in the Black Widow movie and Hawkeye show. Plus, Florence Pugh has become an even bigger star since BW and David Harbour has the Stranger Things buzz going for him this year. I think this is movie could surprise

The problem is to the average person, Bucky isn't as known. He wasn't brought back until way after the commercial peak of comics.

You ask someone on the street about comics and you say Gambit, Venom, Bane, and Winter Solider, the first three are a lot more well known because they were introduced during that post-Secret Wars to the start of Image Comics Era. Comics were much hotter.

Winter Solider/Bucky is a cool character, but the same thing would happen that just did with Brave New World, he's not a main eventer in the eyes of the average movie goer.
