I assume there will be a trade around/before Dec 1st, when Franson will sign and Leafs re-evaluate.

Sorry, maybe it's because I got no sleep last night, but what is the point of this?

Rielly gets the first 9 game tryout and then returned to junior thereby saving a year on his ELC.

Then Franson is resigned to take his place.

Thus the Leafs salary cap altered from the first 9 games and then thereafter.

-Rielly gets a 9 game tryout
-MacWilliam is ready to play in the NHL/deserves a tryout
-We have enough cap space through games 1-20(even to sign Raymond)
-We will be fine without Franson for the first 20 games.
-No need to panick...yet.

Maybe even something like:

Rielly games #1-9
MacWilliam games #10-18
Percy games #19-27
Sign Franson for game #28 = Dec. 1st cutoff.

Don't say goodbbye to Franson just yet.

I see this as a real possibility. Keep Rielly on the roster for the first month or so and play him in 9 of the first 12 - 15 games.
After that there should be enough cap space to sign Franson and Rielly can go back down to JR play in the wjhc and get traded to a contender for the whl playoffs.

Agreed.

I see Rielly as playing approx 10 games with the Leafs, 10 games with his junior team, misses 10 games for WJC's, goes back to his junior team for 10 games, traded to a condtender for final 15-20 games, playoff run, memorial cup run. Easy peasy, much to learn.

The truth is strong in this post.

Not to mention the tail end of the Marlies season.

this is what I want too, a little taste of the NHL, back to junior to dominate, then WJC, then a bit more junior then a few games in the AHL(or WHL playoffs).

So what's the deal with Franson and the cap situation? What happens if someone puts in an offer sheet? What options do the Leafs have right now?

If the compensation is anything less than a 1st and a 3rd it will be matched and we'll fit him in. If it's a 1st and a 3rd I'd say we're likely to let him walk.

Franson wants a 1 year deal at around 3 million, the leafs want a 2 year deal at a little over 2 million per. Leafs don't want a 1 year deal with Kessel, Phaneuf, Bolland, Kulemin, Gardiner, etc already having expiring contracts next off-season. Neither side is budging on term, and once that happens (it will be Franson imo, unless he signs an offersheet) a deal will get done.

How? assume someone signs him to a 3.2M contract in the next day or 2? You have a week to match, the only way it works is if you trade 3M in salary ie Kulimen. Knowing you are over a barrel no one will offer much.

I guess we can look forward to John-Michael Liles: 4th line winger if a forward happens to get a day-to-day injury while Clarkson is supended...
Won't be happening. Carlyle is a hard ass and don't like soft.

I can't be the only one who thinks Rielly is here to stay. He's been playing well enough to play in our top four. I'd put money on him playing the year with the Leafs
