Isn't that McDavid's #?? Toews has his # but why 97 for Joe? Some inside joke or humor by Jumbo? People were waiting for 2018 to see 87 and 97 together, but they already are together.

From the pic below they actually have some resemblance. McDavid has that same facial expression and stare.

Team Canada doesn't respect Jumbo enough to give him 19 and Thornton doesn't respect McDavid enough to back the **** off from 97.

Biggest McDavid support -- Jumbo has worn 97 for years.

Thornton has been a great player and been around for a billion years and McDavid has been around for one. Even if they were on the same team, there's no reason for Thornton to give up his number that he's worn for all of his international tournaments for McDavid.

Oilers fans have no problem with it.

Jumbo was drafted in 97 and has worn it multiple times representing Canada.

Oiler fans know that and respect it. I'm sure McDavid does too, he's a modest and humble kid.

Thornton has been in the league almost as long as McDavid has been alive. He also typically wears #97 internationally for Canada because back in his hey-day, Yzerman had dibs on #19 (with Gretzky going so far as to "retire" the number for the 2004 WC and 2006 Olympics). No slight to McDavid. Nothing to see here.
