THN Kings Drafting Article

Been saying so for years, which is why I was opposed to the Sekera deal. A first was a big price to pay.

But as the article said, LA is deep so they can strike out and be ok, so that lost 1st isn't critical as things are looking now.

Thanks for posting that and it was a good read. You nailed it mostly with the elite teams build through the draft thing but there is a little more to it as well. Nice article.

I appreciate the article.

But I really wish there would be a good article which talks about the development of these prospects on top of the scouting. Would Toffoli be the same player he is today if he was drafted by Edmonton? I can't say for sure, but I have a hard time believing so.

They're no Al Murray ;-), but Futa and Yanetti are worth every penny. Toffoli in the 2nd round is mind-blowing. Pearson's wheels alone are a huge boon to a big, burly (slowish) team, and Shore has been terrific. Go right down the line. You try to get 2 NHLers out of every draft and they have delivered every time.

Oh, and 2 Stanley Cups in 3 years what their predecessors couldn't muster in 45. How far this team has come.

They are good, but they took Forbort instead of Tarasenko, Teubert istead of Karlsson and Hickey instead of Alzner…

In 2008, they had taken who is now the best defenseman in the game #2 and needed a SAH for the bottom pair in the future, and lets not act like they would have been able to keep both long-term, one at $7M, the other at $6.5M. 2010 is easy, they simply value defenseman more than forwards, especially wingers.

You can't compare forwards to D selections. If you want to say never take a D, then DD wouldn't be around. There are fewer D to pick from, IMO. There are more F in the world that could potentially make the NHL. Thus, you'll still get good people in lower rounds. Also, if you're going to compare D picks to F pics at all, wait until everyone is around 25 yrs old, and then tell me what you think. Just because young forwards give a team a more instant return does not mean that the D picked instead is a bad pick when the adjustment period for D is longer and many times the return realized at a later date.

If they would not have been able to keep both long-term, they could trade second one for great return. This was huge mistake.

Good point. Drafting talent with a proper head on their shoulders is huge but proper development is perhaps even more vital. That's where DL, Hextall (until he left), the scouting for the guys still in juniors and the Monarchs come into play. Well built team off the ice as well we have.

man I hate posts like these. Please, go find me a team that doesn't miss on guys. Didn't like 14 teams pass on Tarasenko and Karlsson?

The Red Wings, who some call the greatest drafting team of our generation, took Jakub Kindl over Tuukka Rask. We drafted Voynov two picks after they took Tom McCollum. Every team misses, it's why getting two NHL players out of a draft, when on average you should have seven draft picks, is considered good. You are expected to whiff on at least five of seven picks.

I just stated they made some serious mistakes drafting in first round.

Yes, the scouts and the development team working together are knocking it out of the park for the Kings. Having a GM that refuses to rush players that aren't ready helps a lot as well.

Yup. Just look at what the Ducks did to Gibson. He needed more time to develop and should have never started in Game 7 last year.

To add to your Toffoli remark, Pearsons story is more mind blowing! He was drafted 30th in the first round of his third year of draft eligibility. 449 selections happened before he was finally picked!!

The Kings have done a fine job drafting. The proof is in the pudding. And development is obviously another huge factor.

How many teams passed on Toffoli or Pearson or Simmonds or ... blah blah blah. I bet all three of those guys are outperforming quite a few players drafted ahead of them.

It's inevitable and always blown out of proportion. Two of the four core players on this team were gems. Kopitar fell and Quick was a third rounder. It all evens out especially when you have a fantastic later round record and extremely efficient development. Kings will be an elite team for many years and it's solely because of their great drafting and development. It's by far the most important pillar when building and sustaining success. Also noteworthy is Dean's incredible trading record. Kings don't even need to utilize free agency because they aren't gonna hand out blank checks like other GMs.
