For the period ending 01-22-04
Who’s Hot:
Offensive player of the week - Alexei Kovalev (PIT)
10 points in 4 games, rounded his game out with 14PIM to keep his adversaries at bay. Honourable mention to Jeff O’Neill w/ 9 points in 4 games
Sniper of the week – Jaromir Jagr (WAS) and Sergei Samsonov (SJS)
Both players put up 5 goals on only 15 shots for a scary 0.333 shooting percentage
Defensive player of the week – Tom Koivisto (TOR)
0 points but plus 7?! A surprise from a surprising team to be sure.
Smashmouth player of the week – Chris McAllister (BUF)
24PIM in 4 games
Goalie of the week – Sebastion Caron (TOR)
After being runner up last week he takes home the prize with a 1.38 GAA and 0.947 sav% in 5 games
Honourable mention to Brian Boucher who recorded 2 shutouts in his only 2 starts of the week. Hmmm where have I heard that Boucher name from before? :-P
Other notables:
Craig Conroy (STL) has been Mr. Consistent as his point scoring streak is alive at 15 games while Brendan Shanahan (NYR) is right on his heels with a 14 game point streak
Who’s Not:
St. Louis goaltending tandem of Martin Biron and Mike Dunham – Combined 4.13GAA and 0.852 sav%. Mr Quain time to get your head out of the sand. You need some goaltending help.
Bret Hedican (MIN) – 0 points, -8 and 0 PIM in 5 games. Isn’t he supposed to be playing the role of moderately physical stay at home dman? Somebody check his ID this must be an imposter
Vancouver Canucks – Win the loss of their heart and soul player Joe Nieuwendyk the team is in disarray. Nine players had minuses in the –5 to –7 range
Eric Belanger (NAS) – 6 games 24 shots on net = 0 goals ?! Eric stop being a puck hog and pass instead!
Chris Pronger (STL) – Mr Injury himself is now out for the 3rd time this season. Maybe the conditioning time lost in the preseason due to the carried over suspension he incurred last year in the play-offs is having some lingering effects.
