USA and/or Canada loses a game or tournament.

"Let's go back to amateurs"

Goes back to amateurs

Canada/USA loses in the amateurs tournament.

"We didn't use our best players"

I am just sick of the countless "let's to back to amateurs" threads. I want to see the best players!

this is how the hockey world works:

every 4 years the euros come out and bash the hell out of north americans and complain about everything until they either win and they gloat for a few days, or they lose and they are never heard from again, until another 4 years

I speak the truth. When the NHL decides to not send the best player in the future, not as many will care about olympic hockey, and that country who wins has not won with their best players as will be pointed out.

I think its funny that the ameri/canadian folks think the NHL alone decides all of this... Hello?

The IIHF is the world governing body for ice hockey. I can gurantee you if sending a player to the NHL means that player becomes totally unavailiable for his national ice hockey association, then people will come up with ways to prevent players to go to the NHL.

It would be sheer idiocy to raise talent in Munich to entertain people in Vancouver only.

Also there is the NHLPA and about 50% players from Europe there. Guy's like forsberg will not accept any kind of work-contract that does not allow them to represent their countries.

Well, Fasel is on record saying that he will do anything possible to ensure the NHL remains in the Olympics...

That being said, I do wish the European Federations will demand Olympic participation in any future IIHF/NHL transfer agreement. Question will be if they will take slightly less monetary compensation for this (perhaps) concession from the NHL.

I agree, 100%

it was the same in Salt Lake City

everyone was saying that if Canada or the USA doesn't win the gold, there would be no NHL players in Torino ... :madfire:

only losers think that way ...

everyone including yourself?

this is absolute crap. we have a guy like SectionX whining 24-7 about the mightly Ed Snyder preventing his beloved Forsberg from playing in the games and how it will hurt Swedens chances, but then turnaround and saying that we whine when we lose without our best?

The only reason people want amateurs in the games is because they are not sympathizing with the overpaid pro athletes who seem to get everything they want, and now they get Olympic gold. Whereas competitors in other sports often have to work day jobs and balance training with putting a meal on the table

the problem with that logic is, there are no true amateur hockey players, except those playing in beer leagues. and while the olympics had rules in place preventing pros in the games, the Russians had pros playing many years before the rest of the world was able to.

Now the playing field is even. There is no way the IOC will go back to "amateurs". There is no reason to. The NHLers are a huge increase in ratings and income for the IOC and plus, the players WANT to go.

The only solution is to better negotiate a deal with the NHL to get more tranparency between NHL season and Olympics. The league needs to start earlier or end later in olympic years and give the whole league at least a week PRIOR to the games so that teams can practice and rest up. Playing 2 games in 3 nights before flying halfway across the world to play 8 games in 12 days is ridiculous.

As such, I think the IOC has to do a better job of promoting the NHL while the games are running. Make these new fans realize there is a whole league out there where these superstars are playing and promote interest in individual players like Modano, Sakic, Bertuzzi, Koivu, Jagr so that these new fans can go back and say "hey Joe Sakic plays for the Colorado Avalanche, maybe ill try to follow a game or 2 online or on satelite"

thenextone, I agree with what you're saying, especially
