This entire team should win the Masterton

The team as a whole is clearly way ahead of where they were expected, hence "burn the boats." But almost every single player has dealt with significant individual adversity as well. Obviously every NHL player is going to have ups and downs, and maybe playing in Toronto makes it more public. I think we should acknowledge though that on this roster there's a lot of guys who've seen their careers get close to ending.

The Bad News Bears in no particular order:

Mark Fraser (waived)
Frazer Mclaren (waived)
Colton Orr (waived)
Ryan O'Byrne (arrested)
Joffrey Lupul (injuries)
Tyler Bozak (undrafted)
Phil Kessel (cancer)
James Reimer (echl)
Ben Scrivens (echl)
Nazem Kadri (career ahler)
Nikolai Kulemin (all his bros died, offensive struggles)
Mikhail Grabovski (health issues?)
Leo Komarov (estonian)
John-Micheal Liles (constant healthy scratch)
Cody Franson (not good enough to play for Ron Wilson)
Mike Kostka (undrafted, hair is too beautiful, isn't particularly good at hockey)
Jake Gardiner (#freeGardiner)
Dion Phaneuf (had to be captain/take heat for struggling team last year)
Jay Mcclement (the opponent always has an extra skater when he's on the ice)

nothing obvious:
JVR
Joe Colborne
Matt Frattin
Carl Gunnarson
Clarke MacArthur

Nah if it went to a team they'd probably give it to the Toilet Seats. Last to first in one year, etc etc.

Most of those aren't even bad. Worst reasons are Komarov being Estonian, and McClement being good at the PK.

I'm not saying their lives were over, I'm saying their careers were in doubt. The waived guys weren't just waived, they cleared waivers. To come back from "no NHL team wants me" to "I'm contributing huge to a playoff bound team" is a big deal.

Nothing obvious....?

JVR injuries
Colborne playing through broken wrist
Frattin coming back after his surgery
Gunnarsson is playing with a hip injury

MacArthur was nothing in Buffalo....

in all honesty.
i think if Lupul comes back, plays healthy, he should get it. this guy: so awesome.

Matt Frattin

In July 2009 he was briefly detained by police after allegedly throwing a kitchen table from a garage at 3 AM. He later stated that in his first years at North Dakota his play suffered due to the amount of time he spent partying.[3] He was released from the team in August 2009 after being arrested for driving under the influence.[4] Though he almost left college to play professionally, Frattin decided to stay at North Dakota even though he had lost his athletic scholarship. He took one semester off from school and worked two jobs in Edmonton. He worked at his father's two Italian bakeries and for a concrete company run by a family friend.[3][5] Frattin returned to the team in December 2009 and was later found not guilty of all charges.[2][6] He is very close to his North Dakota teammates, many of whom consider him to be a notorious prankster.[2] Several of his teammates have also applauded his humble attitude after returning to North Dakota.[7]

silly thread considering you can make the same argument for almost any team, not to mention some of those are wayy off base - Kadri was never a "career AHLer", Grabo hasn't had health issues till recently, ECHL is just a different development path for a player.. etc. BUT it's good to see all those players piecing it together and playing well as a team. we haven't had a dynamic bunch like this a long, long time.

Gotta admit I chortled at Leo's reason. I like the cut of your jib OP.

The only players on there that deserve mention for the Masterton (FOR THIS YEAR) would be Kulemin or Lupul.

And Komarov because he's Estonian? Then you can consider Frattin for Masterton because he's from ****ing Edmonton.
