So you’re saying not trading Sanheim at the TDL was a mistake by Chuck? Since we would’ve had to accept 4 years of a bad contract to move him in the summer?
The bigger problem is no one in the FO wanted to embrace a rebuild, Trots declared the Emperor was stark naked, and that still didn't work. CF made the worst of a bad situation.

The point is Briere didn't get "lucky," it would have worked out if he traded Sanheim, it wasn't a bad deal under the circumstances. Turns out the Flyers are a much better team than the FO expected, but last summer Briere was focused on rebuilding, garnering assets like 1st rd picks. So it would have made sense to make that deal b/c Sanheim would be 30+ when this team was expected to compete.

Briere has to work with what he inherited, "coulda woulda shoulda" don't matter, split milk, water under the bridge and other related cliches.

TK for Zegras or one of Buffalo’s young C’s. Idk if Anaheim wants an older player but who knows? Buffalo needs to start thinking of the present and not the future, think there could be something there

You don't trade a first line forward who is 26 for an unproven 2C.

By any measure, TK is one of the top forwards in the NHL, and that's before you factor in his intangibles. He may be one notch below the elite dozen or so, but he's certainly in the top 30 or so.

It's not like he made a huge jump,
pp/60: 1.55, 2.26, 2.11, 2.32, 1.94, 2.27, 2.26, 2.61.
because Flyers have been so variable, xGFrel:
-2.12, +2.12, -2.65, +5.72, +1.61, +4.53, -1.13, +8.10

The difference this season is he's playing with Couts and Frost, he's been given a big role on the PK, and would be scoring more with a functional PP.
Torts has unleashed him, letting him use his speed on the rush and to drive play.

With a big pay increase coming in the near future things become more complicated

Atkinson sure does turn in acceptable metrics, but he also sure does blow it in egregious fashion in highly noticeable situations.

He seems to be an adored darling, so I guess we just have to hope he figures out how his shot works with his remodeled neck.

Gotta love "Yeah but you wanted to dump Sanheim too!" trying to defend this team's braintrust making a dumb decision re: trading Sanheim. Even if it was true (it isn't), you're defending it by saying the GM is just as stupid as the average HF boards user? As stupid as the people you're calling dumb for wanting to trade Sanheim?

Great. Glad this team's management has cleared such a high bar for success. Maybe the next GM will be able to outwit the average hockeybuzz poster, THEN this team will have a true maverick at the helm.

I'm not sure Sanheim won't be the 3rd best Flyer D-man next season, Drysdale is simply more talented (much better lateral agility), and York is smarter and better hands. We'll see about Bonk and Andrae down the road.

On the other hand, cap money isn't an issue going forward, even with Sanheim's contract and an extension for TK, Flyers will have plenty of cap room for 3 or 4 years. So keeping Sanheim isn't going to be an issue until maybe the second half of his contract.

It'll start getting tight around 2030, when Michkov gets his big money extension after a couple 100 point seasons. :naughty:

Flyers still trying to get Seeler signed, and determining who their group is going forward

There's little chance either of those teams make those trades without it being a gross overpayment. Buffalo and Anaheim are both well outside of the playoffs. Zegras doesn't get traded unless it is for someone younger or a slew of draft picks. I'm not sure which of Buffalo's guys you are thinking about, but Middlestadt is at nearly a PPG at 24 years old so I envision no trade of him unless you're giving up major pieces. Cozens or Krebs could be in the fold but again, it would be a bad trade partner. They aren't going to want any of our older guys and we presumably wouldn't want to give up any younger guys/high picks.

Who have they extended, TK at 22, Tippett at 26, Farabee at 22, Sanheim at 27.

If they had extended Walker, it would have been no more than 3 years, with no clause for his third season so he could be moved in the summer or at the TDL.

They have 19 picks the next two years before they trade at the TDL. At some point later round picks have almost zero value due to the 50 contract limitation. So they're probably not that interested in more late round picks but want to stockpile picks in the top 100.

Briere probably prefers Seeler on a low cost deal to provide some grit on a young undersized group than a 5th rd pick, but if someone offers a 3rd, nice knowing ya.

I think we might trade 1st rd picks for a center under 25 that they feel would thrive as a 2C with 1C potential, but not for a middle six type.

Watch what what they do and not what they say. Nothing they have done has indicated rebuild. They've been lying to us the whole time.

It is a bold and courageous path. It is like Leto II's Golden Path; filled with pain, agony, and dishonesty, but humanity will be stronger in 10,000 years because of it.

Their entire plan was to publicly claim this is a rebuild over and over but they were and are hoping that they make the playoffs so that they can point to that as how they're ahead of their timeline and better than they expected so it's time to compete.

It's not a rebuild.

What happens when they embarrassingly miss the playoffs? Do it again next year? Who knows.
