clearly one deserves a major and a hearing with the league, the other a yawn.
And people wonder why the isles had to take things into their own hands a few years ago with Pittsburgh. It's because of THIS double standard
I don't think it's as much a double standard as it is plain inconsistency. Some fans like to think that the league has some vendetta against their team, but let's be real.
I don't necessarily think the league has a vendetta against the Isles, but I wouldn't be shocked if "star" players were treated more leniently than 29 year old rookies.
Just because 1 dirty hit goes unpunished-doesn't mean that the other should as well. Mac deserves a suspension. It was careless, stupid, and above all else dangerous. A hit like that has no place in hockey.
By many people's arguments Bertuzzi got a huge slap on the wrist for breaking Moore's neck (his full season suspension was the lockout)-so therefore no dirty hits deserve suspensions? Silly argument.
Refs missed a call... What's the big deal?
Besides, Cmac saw the guy's numbers for much longer than Dion did JT. Cmac also drove his guy further than Dion did. Not saying the Dion didn't deserve a penalty, he did. But Cmac's hit was more egregious.

McDonald has no prior disciplinary action taken against him in either the NHL or the AHL and thankfully Lovejoy wasn't injured. It was a careless play, but there's nothing to suggest there was any malice in the action. A suspension is overly harsh in this case. If he does it again, that's a different story.
I was thinking 2 maybe 3In all fairness if he does something like this next year let's say...you're going to hear the argument that he's never been suspended before for a dirty hit. And there is nothing to suggest that it wasn't malice though. We don't know what his intentions were-and for all we know it could have been a complete dumb mistake. But the fact is he made a stupid check (from behind), wasn't playing the puck, and put Lovejoy into a very dangerous situation. Make no mistake about it-Lovejoy could have easily gotten a concussion (or worse) form te hit. In short: we don't know Mac's intent-but if you look at the facts at what happened he endangered another player's career with an illegal hit. To me that deserves a suspension. Not a 5+ game or anything out of control like that-but a suspension nonetheless.
