OT: The OT Thread: To move or not to move, that is the question.

Thanks.

Yesterday was a really draining day.

It started with some drama at church that was not handled well and led some past traumas to really get brought back up for me. So, not a great way to start the day.

Then, midway through the game, my ex texted to say that her mom had passed.

And then the Bills lost.

My younger two kids seem to be in OK shape today. Given that she had been in the hospital for the past month, they were prepared for her to pass. And I think that they are relieved that she is no longer suffering.

That sounds like a lot a lot. Wow.

Rough day friend. Hope your kids are holding up okay in particular.

Had a job I was going to apply for. Basically as close to a slam dunk as possible. Needed to submit a written letter of recommendation. Received that yesterday, but requested the writer edit something. Haven't gotten that edit yet. Checked today and the job is gone. I just want to scream.

EDIT:
I called HR and eventually got a call back. The job's back listed again. Applying now, AND I think I'm getting a reference letter from a current employee.

So my work did a “cost of living” adjustment to the salary schedule but because I’m above the minimum amount for the new schedule for the level of employee I am, it will not adjust my pay at all. So yeah it is not a true COL adjustment. Guess I gotta wait and see what happens when merit conversations happen in 2 weeks and go from there. But there is less and less keeping me from jumping ship. Only thing that is keeping me here currently is that it is hard to find a new job that pays close to what I currently make.

But with stagnant pay, life getting so much more expensive, and other things my days are probably numbered.

Jump ship. I was in the same situation, and hoped it would improve.

Each company is different obviously, but the corporate trend these days would bet against it getting better.

Man, everytime I see this shit it pisses me off. Stuff is constantly getting more expensive while the big companies profit more and pay less tax. And they can't even share the crumbs.

It's gonna get ugly real soon I fear.

100%. It's the largest smash and grab in history, and it's completely unsustainable.

I have been looking. The sad part is, that my company used to be excellent and I was paid well above market average in my area for my job and I got good merit raises year over year for a while. But pay has become stagnant and this “COL” increase just makes it worse. But because of where I started and where I’m at now, not many places I’ve looked at are hiring at the level of pay I’m comfortable with. And with life getting more expensive and corporate greed increasing, I’m in a tough spot. Want/need to make more but not getting it from current company and to leave I need to make close to but preferably more than I’m currently making and the jobs just aren’t there.

I'm hopeful that the job market will improve this spring. It's all cyclical. I would just say that when the market does improve take the leap and get out of where you are, and not just feel like "everything is fine now".

Good luck to you.

Played Apples to Apples tonight with the family at dinner. I pulled the card "Luscious". My wife put down the response "The New York Yankees", and I have so, so many questions that I really, REALLY do not want answered.

I spent 5 months applying for jobs, somewhere between 50-100 didnt really keep track but I never got a single follow up, it finally took me talking to someone in my network to actually get some movement since he was able to make sure my resume got in front of a real person.

This market is brutal. See Doak's post above. It's bad and it's going to get worse as more money trickles up.

Surreal images out of DC with the collision and crash of a commercial aircraft and an Army helicopter. Also odd to think it's the first commercial air crash domestically since flight 3407 crashed in Clarence.

Skaters on board American Airlines flight were likely youth development squad, analyst says

From CNN's Antoinette Radford and George Ramsay
The figure skaters on board the American Airlines flight that crashed Wednesday evening were returning from the National Development Camp, sports analyst Christine Brennan said Thursday morning.

The camp is largely for youth skaters, she said, many of whom “we would expect to see bubble to the surface, rise up and compete moving forward, even to the 2030 Olympic Games.”

“We don’t yet have numbers, and, of course, we’re not going to give any names out at this point,” Brennan said. “But it appears to look like coaches, young skaters, family members – and it could be quite a large number.”

The athletes had been returning from the US Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas, US Figure Skating said in an earlier statement.

“We are devastated by this unspeakable tragedy and hold the victims’ families closely in our hearts,” the organization said. “We will continue to monitor the situation and will release more information as it becomes available.”

This is so sad.

Thinking back to watching the unfolding efforts after Flight 90 hit the 14th Ave bridge back in '82 in all of this and hoping some survive even if the chances seem slim.
awful damn cold here to be in that water for any length of time. Plus, the current is brutal.

My wife and I are debating whether to buy a house in the spring or wait another year or two to see the climate of the country. We may just bail. Some people are viewing this as a utopia, but it isn't the type of utopia I want to be part of.

All that being said, the good news is- I can still talk to you guys regardless of where I move to! I need my safe space to complain about the Sabres, haha.

We're also discussing our options. Good luck to you! Nothing's ever easy...

We have friends that have been contemplating moving. Their challenge is that there are not a lot of countries that would let their entire family emigrate due to a lot of the health issues they are dealing with.

Personally, a lot will depend on where my kids Nate (college junior) and Myles (HS senior) end up long term. I know that I will not want to live a long way away from them.

Yeah. Family is the only thing making us question it, but my sister in law is part of a family that is already being heavily impacted by stuff going on, so they're looking for lawyers in Canada to help them. Seems like they're already one foot out the door. I feel terrible for them :(

Yeah, the tough part for the family we know that is thinking about it the most, they have friends in Canada that are warning them that the rightward shift north of the border might be almost as problematic for them as staying in NY and hoping Prop 1 is a shield for a lot of stuff that is happening at the federal level.

Absolutelty. That's what makes the decision so tough. Moving 200 miles up north may present the same issues in 10 years or sooner. Wild times we're living in!

My 9th grader is already researching college options and wants to go to the University of Copenhagen, and my HS senior is debating between transfer options or riding it out and then bouncing for grad school.

If I were single and childless, I'd already be in Japan, but the whole family thing complicates that.
