I've been going over the roster and considering all characteristics of our players. Sometimes nitpicking very minor flaws or tendencies but attempting to do an honest unbiased assessment. I'll admit i was mostly focusing on the negative when i started but as i identified those i gained appreciation for some often overlooked positives. I'm interested in finding out if anyone else shares my peeves or positives or will mention things i completely missed. They can be anything, nothing should be off limits whether it's a major issue or a trivial one.

1 positive for me is players who are adept at incorporating their feet in order to accept a not so accurate pass.
1 negative is players who while the play is live take a moment to brow beat a ref following a potential missed call or look to the heavens after missing a prime scoring opportunity rather than instantly adjusting to the ever changing situation on the ice.

Trait I love: Skill guys who position their body expertly in the corners to win pucks and maintain possession. Matthews is great at this. I remember 5'11" Alex Mogilny being amazing at it too.

Trait I dislike: Over celebration of goals when there's a lot of game remaining.

Speed, Skill, Size and backbone with a strong compete engine that hate to lose, are my favourite traits in a player.

Soft, Small, easily intimidated perimeter players, that accept losing are my least favourite player traits.

This is my answer!

I love to see defencemen who can position themselves properly so that they can defuse a one-on-one without apparent effort, and without the need for a big hit (I love big hits, but only when appropriate). A few of the best were Allan Stanley, Carl Gunnarsson, and Nik Lidstrom.

I hate defencemen who can't play a two-on-one properly.

Yes Trait: Love for the San Jose Sharks

No Trait: Love for the Toronto Maple Leafs
(e.g. Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau, John Tavares, and how you guys just took them away from us. Broke my heart three times. Tavares used us to get paid more to play in the city he loves. He never wanted to come to SJ)

Trait I love: Two way players; a player that can play on a PP or a PK; a player that can be on the ice when a team needs to get a lead or when it needs to protect a lead.

Trait I love is grit and heart players who take no guff. Gilmour, Clark, Roberts, Tucker, Grabovski, and Kadri exemplified this. Closest person like that on this current iteration of the Leafs is Bunting and occasionally Rielly.

Trait I dislike is unclutch goaltending, which we’ve gotten a lot of in the Matthews era. Don’t need to be a Vezina candidate but it’d be nice for once to go into a winner take all game and and have our goaltender not give up the first goal or let in terrible shots.

Love: compete
Guys who fight super hard (and effectively) to get the puck when they don’t have it, and just as hard to keep the puck when they have it despite tight checking. Prime example: Hyman.

Hate: low defensive hockey IQ
Guys who just don’t see high danger chances developing. Failing to cover the open guy in the slot, failing to identify a dangerous rush fast enough to stay in front of it, failing to keep a tight gap on the appropriate player and thus getting caught in “no man’s land”, etc. Prime example: Phaneuf.

you guys dodged a bullet IMO. You guys already have crap contract of EK95; you wanted another one in Tavares? Tavares still produces but he is in no way worth 11 AAV or 13 AAV (what Sharks offered) in any way shape or form

Love: some players have a desire to get better and work hard at achieving that goal

Hate: floaters and half-assed playoff effort that some continue to exhibit.

Love: The undefinable ability to play "over one's head" for a stretch. Like when a lesser forward gets put on a top line and suddenly plays up to the task. Or when a backup goalie becomes a starter when the normal guy is hurt for a while. Love seeing unexpected success, or players handling a big assignment that people thought they couldn't do.

Hate: Fake toughness. Mostly seen with the old enforcer types. A staged fight here or there, a few big hits that don't impact the game, all packaged with about 5 minutes on the ice where they couldn't actually play hockey.

Love : Players who play smarter not harder, both D and forwards . And the puckdigging, puckhounds, that can pass,
To the smarter but not harder working teammate.

Hate : players that try to play hard, look like they are competing, but in reality get nothing done.

hate inflating xGF% with plays that statistically count as huge chance but in reality have a low chance of leading to anything, and then thinking your team played well. Get the puck to the net and get ugly goals in the playoffs if you need to.

If you want to take shots at guys then include everyone who do dumb / weak stuff in playoffs that costs us games and series. Our other elite winger is no better when it comes to being tough but only one of our wingers gets picked on, who actually drives the net and crashes the net even though he does occasionally make soft weak plays that do deserve to be called out.

Like: Cerebral players who know how to impact the game even when they are not being noticed.

Peeve: Players who are only in the lineup because of "grit" or "intangibles" + goalies who make their defense look bad (or vice-versa).

HM Peeve: Most "eye-tests" or anyone who uses/references/criticizes analytics or statistics when it is clear they lack even a basic understanding of how to use them properly (but this does not really apply to players).
