Not sure we have the same definition of high quality. Are they good pitchers? Yes, Certainly better than the worst pitchers the Jays had. Are they solid enough 8th inning pitchers to face the best teams in the league? Personally i don't think so. Maybe i got spoiled by the Expos in 94 but that's still a weak bullpen for a "contending" team imvho.

I know there has been a notion in the KC media this year on Merrifield that he's been extremely unlucky at the plate and the numbers seem to back that up - all his peripherals (K and BB rates, exit velocity, etc) are pretty in line with his career numbers but he's getting babip'ed hard at .266 from a guy who was .325 career coming into this year.

Merrifield has a .744 XOPS this year and 14 defensive runs saved against him, which is 2nd in the league. In other words, he's been unlucky.

Bass has been better than Jordan Romano this year. He fits the bill of what you're looking for.

All things aside:

Bass/Pop trade: great value to address the teams most glaring need. Not sexy names by any means but both guys project well analytically and one of which is high leverage to take pressure off of the Cimbers and Romanos. Love it even if it's not the seismic move people wanted

Mitch White: okay I guess? I'm not going to act like I know enough about Frasso to say they made a mistake but I was hoping they'd go a bit bigger on the SP front. His metrics look weirdly similar to Thor's right now so...I guess? I didn't think much of Stripling either when he was acquired and that move ended up being great.

Merrifield: hate it. He's the classic case of "least shitty guy on shitty team gets praise" syndrome. Doesn't even start with this team at full strength, hasn't been a good hitter since like 2019 and is a selfish turd. Extra hate points since he's probably still not vaccinated.

All in all: passable deadline, albeit a bit bland. I think it's more the part everyone around Toronto upgraded rather significantly that is going to be the sticking point.

Hopefully they don't sulk and instead take it as confidence in the group as is. This is what they are going with now -- no more speculation hanging over their heads. So just focus on baseball.

But I would get their frustration in seeing many of the other contenders loading up and the team walking away with depth pieces.
