Ehhhhhh. Better than Quintana but not by a lot.

I thought i read something earlier in the season where Thor had serious problems with his velocity and couldn't get guys to swing and miss anymore?
Yeah, he's definitely not the same guy he was. It could be interesting to add him and use him in the pen at some point.

Hmmm adding Iglesias would definitely be interesting.

The underlying numbers paint a conflicting picture; ERA is up, but is WHIP and FIP are both above average. The tradeoff is his BB/9 and H/9 are both up fairly significantly from where they were last year.

Somehow, he makes 16 million (for the next 3 seasons) as a reliever too so the Angels better be eating money on what you could probably argue is a depreciating asset.

Also something else to consider: Iglesias for some reason isn't as good when not in a save situation; 3.36 ERA, 1.158 WHIP, 10.77 K/9, 3.01 BB/9, .221 OBA.

Not terrible, but for 16 million? ehhhhhhh

Not sure how i feel about a package of him and Thor...it's definitely better than just adding Quintana and calling it a day but there's some definite red flags. Thor's metrics definitely show he's not the guy he once was.

Syndergaard is a bit underwhelming if true but we don't really need anything big though it would be nice.

I don't think Syndergaard is a clear rotation upgrade, so I do wonder if they're hoping his stuff will play up in the pen. I wouldn't hate that.

An important detail with Syndergaard is if the Jays are willing to take the entire contract this year he likely won’t cost as much as other arms.

This would be the big thing with him and Iglesias as well.

In theory, assuming this deal doesn't eat too much of your prospect capital, you can still go big game hunting they so chose.

Lots of injuries? Hes doesnt come close to one K per inning. Didn’t he before? He was a fireballer. His WHIP doesn’t look to bad.

Syndergaard and Iglesias don't hold that much value.

Baseball trade values has Syndergaard at 4.7 and Iglesias at -8.9.

We should be able to make a trade like that with just using mediocre prospects like Beltre, Van Eyk, Juenger types.

You wonder if we did that move and then followed it up with getting Skubal, Soto and Lange how good we our pitching be bolstered? Obviously the DET trade would be us giving up some real quality but our pitching staff would look very good after those two moves.

I would guess Thor would push Stripling back to the pen, but Kikuchi would likely be on a short leash in the rotation.

Who knows, maybe Kikuchi could be a decent lefty out of the pen to finish the year. Could always put him back in the 5th spot next year.

"Angels better be eating money"

How many people here wanted to sign Iglesias in the offseason? This is why you don't spend so much on relievers. He hasn't even been that bad but because he's not been a top 10 reliever in the league it's now a bad contract.

Give us 9 million so we're only paying 13 million for 3 years, and we'll give you Victor Mesia

Some rando on Twitter but had it 30-40 minutes before BKuh.

Not a big performer but he would be our 4th best starter by bWAR or fWAR;

bWAR;
Manoah: 3.3
Gausman: 1.4
Romano: 1.4
Stripling: 1.3
Syndergaard: 1.3

fWAR:

Gausman: 3.8
Manoah: 2.5
Stripling: 1.9
Syndergaard: 1.2
Romano: 0.6

Fastball Velo - mph:
Romano: 96.6
Gausman: 95.0
Kikuchi: 94.8
Garcia: 94.7
Syndergaard: 94.5

That will play in the rotation or even better in the pen as you would expect his velo to increase. But Pete Walker with this type of talent usually turns out well; Ray, and Taijuan come time mind.

Thor was arguably the league's best fireballer at his peak in 2015-2018. Dude could touch 100 with his fastball and a sinker that clocked in at 98 mph to compliment it. There's a reason why Jays fans are still bitter he got flipped in the Dickey trade a decade ago.

starting in 2019, Thor had elbow issues that culminated in him having to get tommy john surgery in march of 2020. After that it was basically nonstop elbow issues until this year. He's healthy again but the velo that made him so good has basically evaporated and he's now very much ordinary.

I don't...hate the move but there was a stretch this year where Thor got absolutely shelled because it came apparent his stuff wasn't good enough to cause whiffs without said velocity.

You’d still need another starter though. Need at least 3 reliable starters in a series and right now they only have two (unless you’re willing to start Stripling in Game 3).
